Agree with one of the above posts: should spend at least 5 X worth your monthly salary!! (this is coming from a woman now tho, so take with a pinch of salt!)
But then again, its not the price that matters, and personally I would like to choose exactly what i want, especially if its gonna be quite a bit of money spent on it!do you believe in Fairies?

Good grief! That's considerably more than we spent on our wedding!
My husband proposed with a plastic cracker ring and produced my wedding ring at the same time, saying he didn't want an engagement, he wanted a marriage. I still think it was one of the most romantic things we've ever done. (There have been lots more since then.)
I think engagement rings are lovely, and I don't mean to sound negative, but 5 months' salary is an awful lot of money that can be put to very good use in the marriage. I would be terrified to have that much money on my finger incase I lost it.
I do think that you need to know very clearly what she likes before choosing it yourself though. I would probably have chosen it myself if I'd wanted one. And I'd have probably wanted to pay around half his gross monthly salary for it. (I did see some I liked at that price but decided the money would be better spent elsewhere and I felt I wouldn't feel like I missed out by not having one but I appreciate that it's a choice most women would not share.)
Good luck!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
Firstly, the rule about how much to spend on an engagement ring was a marketing ploy thought up for De Beers!
memark has given some excellent advice re considering the 4 C's, too.
We skipped the engagement ring part when we got married as we couldn't afford it then but for our 5th anniversary, I got the ring I really wanted.
I did loads of research online and eventually bought from America with the help of https://www.pricescope.com, a diamond forum. In the end we paid £1500 for a GIA certified emerald cut centre stone and baguette side stones, totalling a carat (G, VVS2) and set in platinum. It was valued at just under £4,500. Nice saving huh?0 -
Morning everyone.
I saw a post a few days ago for engagement rings and i was hoping someone could help me.
Iv been married for a year, but we never bought an engagement ring because of cash flow problems.
my OH and i would like to get one now, but i dont want to buy an expensive ring! i dont really even mind not having one - we love each other with or without one! but we going to meet family in december who will ask to see "the ring" etc.... i would like to buy one second hand because then its cheaper and we're saving to buy a home next year, but not sure where to look on the web - have checked out e bay though.
anyone got any ideas??????????

If you aren't bothered really about a ring - or a diamond especially, QVC do some great looking dymanique rings at a fraction of the cost of a diamond. When I was expecting my first child and couldn't get my "proper" ring on but felt naked without my rings, my husband bought me one and it was only £60 but looked like the real thing.0
