Thanks for taking the time to rip me apart

Chill out, nobody's trying to rip you apart, we're just making sure that people don't get ripped off. You only have to look at the £100+ HDMI cables in the likes of Curry's to see how easily some people can be duped by unscrupulous sales people.

It is has been said that for short runs most any HDMI cable is fine. Interference and sheilding for runs under 2m or 5m are insignificant as the signal to noise is fine.

As cables get longer 20m or more then the quality becomes a concern. See the mono price 50ft fail at 1080p.

Interesting they tested 1440p as this is not widely used.

Of course the build quality of the cable is important, but as TVs and AV kit is usually static this may be less of an issue. Also HDMI cables are not like SCART where the construction of cheap cables fall apart after repeated insertion / removal . Rather HDMI cables like USB cables are design to be factory made with injection moulding and strong metal shroud which means that even the cheap cables are well made.

I have to agree with the consensus on here that the cheaper cables are perfect for most UK home installations, and pay more than £3 or £4 yields no benefit.

Having said this the deciding factor might be the type of installation. If you are installing the cable inside a wall then it is worth paying extra for better cables that are CERTIFIED HDMI as the cost of replacement is very high as you have to break the wall and re run cables and redecorate!

It all breaks down to several factors

    1) Type of installation (standard Vs in wall)
    2) Type of sources (1080p Blue ray or FreeSat HD) now and in the "future"
    3) Audience (some people are more sensitive to visual artefacts, audio set up)
    4) Budget and replacement cycle (some folk upgrade regularly others run their kit until it breaks! I'm still on CRT!)
    5) The kit at each makes a big difference as high end kits has better specs and can work around more issues. (see the PS3 Samsung test below)

Sure the 7 day offer is a great mid range cable, and the other cheaper cables also offer great value.

When you buy make sure you know the data rate your sources and TV will need to support, then check your re cabling costs if doing in wall, then decide.

Here are some useful links and for people who care checkout HD Nation on revision 3 I'm a big fan of Robert Heron.

The cable is a bit overspeced for normal use, but ideal for in wall as it is cheap but goes up to 2160p that said the content providers are not likely to support this any time soon. The broadcast technology refresh cycle is really slow in the order of 20 years, today's HD TVs are low def compared to what computers can support :)

    Konig Professional HDMI 1.3c cable.
The HDMI1.3c standard supports a higher resolution than previous ones (up to full 2160p!)and has a AWG value of 24 (0.511mm diameter per straw). This ensures a interference free signal over even longer distances.

    Fully supports up to 2160p
Wire gauge: AWG 24 (0.511mm diameter)
    Maximum resolution: WQXGA 2560x1600
    Maximum bandwidth: 340 MHz
Connectors: HDMI male - HDMI male
    Length: 1.5 meter
    Standard: HDMI 1.3c
Wire gauge: AWG 24 (0.511mm diameter)
    Gold plated: Yes - 24K
    Maximum resolution: WQXGA 2560x1600
    Maximum bandwidth: 340 MHz

Worth pointing out that very few devices support 1.3c HDMI Spec and that the prices quoted by the OP is lower than UK suppliers as there is no VAT 7day shop are in the CI (they are an excellent company) and the price is below the £19ish threshold for VAT on personal imports.

If you are still reading note that HDMI 1.3c was released on August 25, 2008 and changed testing requirements for active HDMI cables. HDMI 1.3c has no effect on HDMI features, functions, or performance and HDMI 1.4 products are due out end of 2009!

    Seth -still on CRT ;)

Oh and the cable mentioned by the OP is CERTIFIED. While ebay certified cables are likely to be fake, 7 day are a reputable oufit.

Seth, totally agree alot of things on ebay that are too good to be true usually are....although my OP stating that I had bought my Konig from ebay is totally original, down to cable ties used, the chain holding the product tag/book being matt laminated & embossed. The connectors at each end are faultless ie: not bad castings, being a printer for most of my life ive spotted a few fakes in my time, now being a graphic designer I know thw tell tale signs of fakes....i bought and returned a fake 'Sony' MS Duo card from ebay
Again all I was saying is that its good cable for the £12.99...nobody seems to want to agree with me .....thanks for everyones input tho....keeps the old grey matter working

Have a look at the place/pictures on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=350238590949&Category=32837&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D1#ht_1894wt_939

wow....ever felt like you've been ganged up on....I do see all of your point of views ...i just thought it was a nice cable for the money....sorry chaps!

this site seems to be like that. :D

But there is no reason at all to not buy the cheapest HDMI cable you can find. As said above they are digital so either work or they don't. They are completly different to say a scart cable where quality counts.

Don't loose sight of what I was trying to say....I, as in MY opinion, thought it was a great "quality" cable for the price of a curry for 2 (lets not get into an argument about the cost of a curry now!) I didn't say other cables were cr#p....I didn't say others wouldn't work as well and I didn't say it was the cheapest , I just said it was made really well and I wanted to share a "good buy" with you guys.....believe me, I had no idea that I would have been lighting the touch paper!!!!

Thanks for taking the time to rip me apart

By drawing a comparison to the price of curry inferring cheapness you are essentially slagging off the nation's favourite dish.

Are you not satisfied with purchasing the most expensive HDMI cable in the world and then bragging about it around here without insulting millions of Asians in Bradford into the bargain?

I hope a moderator comes along soon and bans your bottom to hades.

  • So does your cheap £1.99 ebay cable give the same quality picture as the other 'unmentionable' one? :D
