Are your wages so irregular that you need to budget on a month by month basis? Have you ever considered creating a fixed budget based on your lowest typical monthly wage and then treating anything extra earned as a bonus? It might take a few months to adapt to but it might provide a bit more focus for long term planning... Just a thought, feel free to tip custard over me if it's rubbish!
This is exactly what I do (er.. edit: the budgeting, not secret drinking!). I start off with my fixed outgoings and budget on minimum income. Then add in sporadic expenses (car insurance renewal, MOT, servicing, Christmas etc, then work out what I will save each month. Any bonus beyond minimum earning either gets saved entirely, or split between adding to savings and splurging a bit. I've just finished 2010's spreadsheet todayStarting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. then work out what I will save each month
See - this is the bit I need to get better at. I'm great at saying what I should save, but I need to stick to the budget in 2010 so that it's also what I do save! :T0 -
I set ING to take it out by Direct Debit the month before. I don't get a say in the matter ! The money being 3 days away also stops me 'dipping'.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Have done the same with IF in the past, but it's all too easy to change the deposit frequency
2010's resolutions = patience and willpower?

Definitely sound like plans. You won't succeed without a bit of willpower.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Thanks, and best of luck to you, too. :T
Having just read what I wrote, I've realised it kind of makes your thread sound like an experiment, lol!
*Disclaimer* The above-posted embedded link was merely Pickle's experiment in trying to get it to work and, in true wormhole-like fashion, links back to the place that told her how to do it (think the Hadron Colider!). Ruby's thread is a real, genuine thread run by a real, genuine ruby eskimo (that last bit might not be 100% true!
