GREEN PAPER CONSULTATION
The number of responses on the government's own green paper website has more than quadrupled since we asked you to post there last Tuesday. The number of posts on the executive summary page - where the vast majority of responses are published - has risen from 133 to 640 in the course of the last week. The overwhelming majority of posts are strongly against any changes to disability benefits. You can read the responses, and add your own, here:
http://careandsupport.direct.gov.uk/greenpaper/execsum/
This is your chance to make it clear that there is absolutely no consensus for a raid on disability benefits. So, please, keep those responses coming. Anything from a single sentence to hundreds of words is fine, just so long as you have your say.
There is a discussion about these proposals, and MSEr's concerns here
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1861227
I have started a new thread about registering objections on the Govt consultation paper, because some people have told me that they are having problems with the Govt site, and have been unable to leave their comments. I think this is worth monitoring.
These Govt claims that these plans will only go ahead if there is general consensus
PLEASE DON'T LET APATHY BE MISTAKEN FOR CONSENSUS

I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

Thanks for that Daisy,i`ll head over there now and have my say -)
Its also worth reminding people that many disabled charities have been asked by the govt.for input and its worth contacting them to have YOUR say,I contacted the NSE (epilepsy charity)and they are using some of the points I raised in their submission to the Joint Epilepsy Council who have been asked to submit their opinons on the proposal.
But like you point out lets not let apathy be mistaken for consensus.0 -
Don't forget you can edit-copy and then paste in the 2nd link. I have done this and it saves a lot of time.0

Yes, I wrote my comments in a word document and then cut and pasted them into the comments box. For some reason the submit button on the site didn't work for me, but hitting the return key on my keyboard did.
It's not a very user friendly site - the cynic in me thinks maybe that's deliberate...
But don't let that put you off having your say. If people don't shout out now, these benefits will be lost. We never know when illness or injury might strike.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
I've added my 5p worth.
I spoke to ss only friday, they admit they are short staffed and that the waiting list for occupational health assessments is 4 / 5 months...until i am seen i am housebound, imagine if they had our dla money too.... all i want is a ramp so i can get my electric wheelchair out the door, not much but it would be lovely to 'just' go out..
Instead i wait here till my son comes home from school to help me get outLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -

They came and measured for a ramp, then the ss manager said that it wasn't permanent enough. Then they measured for a ramp up the stairs and the price came to £22,000 and I would have to pay half. So they didn't get in touch for months and months. I telephoned them to ask what they were doing but still they did not do anything.
It is now well over a year on top of the 18 months since I heard from them and they still think that I am housebound. I went and bought a rollaramp for £2000 which did the job.
I will never ever let them idiots into my home again. They only help those who have nobody working in the family and if you happen to have a partner who is working full time to pay the bills they are just not interested. I should have really complained to her manager but what is the point? Their wages are money for old rope!
I have a partner working full time, but he doesn't live with me, which is a good thing and a bad thing...
Just me and my DS here, and he's at school, but i have no money ok i lie i have about £4 in savings..Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
Please don't be part of the silent majority. Go to the above link and make your objections heard.
The Govt is proposing that cash disability benefits are stopped and care will be provided by an organisation similar to social services. The funding options in the green paper are:
1 the care will be means tested - people on IS will get free care, the rest may get a contribution towards the care provided and will have to pay the rest themselves
2 as above, but the recipient of the care must take out an insurance to pay the balance of the cost (which amounts to the same thing as many people won't have insurance for this type of thing, and by the time you are already disabled it will be too late)
3 a £17,000 charge per person on your property at aged 60 to cover the cost of any care you may need in your old age OR alternatively this can be paid out of savings. Another alternative is that the charge is paid out of the estate on death. So a couple could see £34,000 shaved off the value of their property overnight, which could amount to a 50% property tax in some areas. This charge won't be applied to people who have no savings and don't own a house.
The other alternative, that disability benefits continue to be paid out of tax and national insurance contributions has already been ruled out by the government and is not included as part of the 'consultation paper'. So people who have paid tax and NI all their lives, have scrimped and scraped to buy a house, and to put by for the future, are the very people who will suffer most under these proposals.
I have nothing against anyone in receipt of means tested benefits as I believe we have a duty as a society to provide for the most vulnerable. But I DO object to the govt moving the goal posts on disability benefits, to make them means tested, and/or to impose a whacking great charge on those people who have worked hard to provide for their retirement.
I also object to the fact that these proposals ONLY apply to England - not Scotland or Wales.
These proposals affect everyone, not just those currently in receipt of disability benefits. So please make your voice heard.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
LD, this is what I found weird. It does say "england" and not UK... I emailed my MSP who said she doesn't understand it because all benefits/ govt payments are funded from Westminster parliament so we can't be excluded up here. Feel like TPTB are up to something. Again. LOL !0
-
Interesting. How will the people in Scotland and Wales react if only the English contingent have been consulted and then the new regime is rolled out across the whole of the UK?
It does say these changes are to be introduced in England, but that means nothing. Remember the Poll Tax - Scotland had it a year (or more?) before England. It was hugely unpopular but that didn't stop them imposing it throughout the rest of the UK.
HAVE YOUR SAY NOW! You might not get a say laterI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
