HTC Hero or iPhone 3GS?
So, after months and months of researching, I've finally come down to the following 2 phones to upgrade to. Either the HTC Hero or the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 3GS (16Gb) I can get for free on O2 with a £32/month contract (Staff Discount!)
- However, it's a 24 month contract! (Damn Apple and O2!)
The best deal I've seen for the HTC Hero, is here because if I got the Hero, I really want the white version which seems to be damn near impossible to find anywhere in the UK on non cashback deals!
That's the contracts sorted, now the performance. Even though the Hero (and Android) looks really promising, I've seen too much on YouTube and other review sites about it's speed issues in comparison to the iPhone 3GS. I know HTC have said a firmware update is imminent but is it really what it's cut out to be? Or should I let O2 tie me up in to a 24 month contract and jump on the iPhone bandwagon?

I've just got the HTC Hero and love it to pieces...it's very customisable, very intuitive and simple plus the apps store, while not as good as the Iphone's, is still pretty impressive!
The only time I've noticed any lag is when trying to open certain apps that I've downloaded...for the most part, though, I haven't had a problem and would highly recommend this phone to anyone!0 -
How many minutes/text do you need? If you are ok with smaller allowance this might work out cheaper at £25/month on 18m contract. Though you need to add £5/mth for internet if you want it.

Dialaphone also had them for £30/month on 18m contract with around 400 mins but no internet (again £5/month extra) You can get quidco cashback + £75 by redemption.0 -
Have you seen the Samsung Galaxy? Looks a great phone on O2 and can get it 18 months as well.0

Whats it like with music, storing etc,how many songs, are they in album format like the iphone,Orange have a better deal than 02 im tempted to change to the Hero.0 -
HTC are brilliant - 2 years is too long to be tied in to a contract...Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos0

I've just gone through the same process, Hero or 3GS.. 2 of my brothers have the Hero and they love it, however they both complain about the same things; speed/lag, camera and video playback.. The camera and video playback I could live with, but I'd hate to have a slow phone that lags alot..
I have no doubt that Andriod OS will be the way forward in terms of apps, etc, however I think this will still take some time.
I ended up buying the 3GS on Pay as you go from Apple, along with a 1 month Simpliticy sim with unlimited Web - that way I could sell my 3gs whenever the time is right for another phone.0 -
Sorry to confuse things, but have you considered the HTC Magic or the Samsung as previously suggested?
I haven't tried the HTC Hero myself but I do know HTC make great phones. I would try onf of them in the shop and then probably go for that because I hate Apple / O2 for trying to tie people into 24 month contracts.0 -

If you combine the pay as you go iPhone (£440 for 16gb 3gs) with the 1 month simplicity contract (600min, 1200 sms + unlimited web for £20 per month) you end up paying the same (over the period), but can cancel after 1 month and can sell your mobile. Add quidco aswell and you can shave another £50 off that price.0 -

Not too bad when you look at it like that I suppose. I'm just a serial tight !!!! though and refuse to spend so much on a phone.....
Even the 3G iPhone on PAYG + £20 sim only works out £48.50 a month over 12 months......
I just couldn't do it - GF for the Nokia 5800 which can do most of what the iPhone can do and more in some cases yet cost her £15 a month over 12 months with cashback deal.0
