£4.70 for the M6 Toll

  • If drivers had boycotted it from the start it would be free by now! If it is successful then the trend will spread. I have and would never use it. Use a map and there are other alternatives to the M6. Sat Navs always seem to choose the obvious routes.

Two weeks ago - after 7 hours driving from Aviemore, and the Radio reporting Birmingham backed up to J11 it was a no brainer to nip through the toll road (1st time ever).

Lovely driving at 5pm on Sat afternoon with only a few cars - strangely all of them were black - at one stage I wondered if they were all unmarked police cars with very bored officers on board. My speed - 69.5mph just to be safe

:-) - time saved meant we were in time to go onto a BBQ and have the sunniest evening of the holidays!!
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

It's been some years since I've used the M6 Toll Road. Most of my meetings have been in Birmingham City Centre so I seemed to have avoided it.

There was me today, bumbling up the M6 and onto the Toll Road. I prepared some change at the services beforehand - £2.50 and popped an extra quid in as well just in case it had gone up. Then when I approached the Toll Plaza I saw the sign - £4.70! I must be getting old. I can't believe it's not butter and that it costs so much. :D Still I suppose there's a cost to avoiding Birmingham" :p:D
Bloody hell.. was £4.50 last time I used it. That said, like any self-respecting MP it was claimed back on expenses :D
  • I too was totally horrified at having to pay £4.50 to get to Walsall. I'd quite happily pay that to get OUT of Walsall tho!

I came off at T6 so got a £1 reduction.

    You what?

I get on at J14 or J13 and off at J10 and often, today included, it's backed up to the Toll link.

    From there to 10A is 30 - 40mins and then another 15 to J10.

I head off through Willenhall and down to the Black Country route which takes 15mins in the boards are lit.

Even heading back at 3pm the queue southbound was from the J11 on ramp.

Boards are always lit I've found, even when the M6 is empty. I just put it down to the same reason that every local sign takes you to the toll road as well, and ignore them.
  • Driving to Scotland I always use the M6, only the odd occasion have I done M40-M42-M5-M6.

My reason for using the M6 toll is simple, the relaxation of it- it is a reliable quick journey time, nice services and a bit less hectic than the rest of the M6- allows me to destress for as the road doesn't quieten down to Lancaster.

If I lived in Stafford etc would I regularly pay £4.70- no way- but on a longer journey it is well worth it. I would like to see the toll cut to £2.50, but we all know it is because the toll company cannot make the toll pay!
  • ive used the toll road once when travelling south but only because my mate was paying for it.
any other time ive just used the old m6. nice services doesnt bother me as i would rather not spend too much time in them anyway and i dont,i just fill up with fuel and back on the road again or a quick bite to eat.
i really grudge having to pay a toll for any road or bridge, im glad up here they abolished the tolls on the forth road bridge and the erskine bridge.
busier roads mean more road tax is paid, so why should we have to pay again?

as another poster said above,if nobody uses it then it becomes pointless and probably free, which discourages more roads like this in the future.
    ...work permit granted!
  • It's the best bit of Motorway I have driven on. I don't go South as oftern anymore, when I do though, I always use it.

99% of the time it's for business, so I just claim it back, but even on private journeys I use it.

absolute luxury when you drive on it :) hence why i have no problems paying it. I am normally on a long journey anyway - and use it to allow my mind to wander :)

The key one is the overhead one, just past J12, that states the time to J10 or J8.

It's the best indicator. Believe me, I know as I do the route everyday!
