£4.70 for the M6 Toll

It's been some years since I've used the M6 Toll Road. Most of my meetings have been in Birmingham City Centre so I seemed to have avoided it.
There was me today, bumbling up the M6 and onto the Toll Road. I prepared some change at the services beforehand - £2.50 and popped an extra quid in as well just in case it had gone up. Then when I approached the Toll Plaza I saw the sign - £4.70! I must be getting old. I can't believe it's not butter and that it costs so much.
Still I suppose there's a cost to avoiding Birmingham"
:D

It would have to be really urgent, and i'd need to get somewhere really important, before i would pay that. I had no idea it was so much.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Brilliant piece of road. Great service station and no riff raff....;)
Since I use it infrequently I'm afraid it's the highlight of any journey south...sad I know. But gives you that feeling of this is how motoring used to be...sigh.0 -
I use it regularly. The original pricing was for the first so many vehicles and then the price went up - I think it has gone up again since then. Living in the Midlands and trying to go south in the rush hour, using the M6 toll can save me up to an hour and a half if the main M6 is slow / standstill. For me, it is worth paying that amount as it means I get more time at home and less time stuck in traffic!0

Another user
Its half way to daughters Uni , and I treat that section as a 'rest'
lot less traffic. the service station is handy ( getting back on to the road is easy )
And I know I am halfway there ( or home)0 -
I recently drove about 100 miles on IP7 down the East coast of Spain an it cost me E14.50. Saying that, it was really nice to drive on a a quiet road.0

the bit I don't like is not only do SatNavs seem to like the toll road ( option to avoid) the local signs encourage usage as well, for more local journeys
ie M42 to Sutton , when the A446 does the job nicely
on their site they say
signage around the M6 Toll has all been developed and approved in coordination with the Highways Agency and the local County Councils and District Councils to ensure that drivers reach their destination by the safest, quickest and most consistent route, whilst relieving less suitable local routes of traffic and as such also aid the environment.Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
