I went into both Comet and Currys today. They had banks of large HD TV's most of them running from a(poor) analog TV signal(we don't have digital TV Sir!) others on a poor signal from a DVD. Their pictures were dreadful!
Others running from a HD source were brilliant but it made comparisons between the sets impossible.
I'm gonna have to third that opinion. Get a standard CRT screen for now, maybe something second hand to last you another year or two at least. I'd only get an LCD or Plasma if space really were an issue as you really are paying a premium for next generation technology that isn't quite yet ready."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Oh dear! now you lot have really confused me, Plasma,LCD and now CRT? I think I will have to go surfing!!!
Thanks for the advice0 -
The buttom line is if you just want a TV then get CRT. If you however want a FLAT TV then for <37" get LCD and for more get plasma.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0

Bottom line is really can you afford it?
Trust me, Plasma and LCD have not taken off as expected and prices will have to come down drastically before ordinary people can afford them. £2000 on the credit card is a lot of money!
Especially as CRT picture is still better!0 -
Has anyone has any experience with LG plasma's or LCD's, I walked into dixons (now Curry's Digital) and I was told that the LG plasma's were quite good in comparison to some of the big name brands....
any thoughts?
I intend to go to John Lewis this weekend and see what they have to say, hopefully get a straight answer and not just get flogged something purely for a sale.0 -

I bought a Panasonic plasma this week from them - they have a few good deals on at the moment.
By the way - Sony have stopped making Plasma screens, just lcd's from now on0 -

Most plasmas have LG or Samsung Plasma display panels. Most plasmas even expensive ones often use vestel electronics. The badge on the front means very little these days. Hitachi seem a bit un-realiable thou! A 'good' LG is as good as any at the moment.0 -
We found the best thing to do was wander round the shops and pick the one with the best picture. Well, the best was a Pioneer 42" Plasma at £2799 which was way over budget but a close second was the Samsung 40" LCD priced at £1499.
Came home and bought it on the net for £1124 from the same shop! Very pleased with features and picture quality. Can I help?0 -
As mentioned before go to https://www.avforums.com before doing anything else. You will get a lot of help and find everything you need to know about all types of display. Don't be scared as people will be happy to answer the most basic of questions.
Looking round John Lewis or Comet is fine if you know for a fact that all the tv's are running from the same source and they have all been calibrated to give the optimum picture but I somehow think that's more than a bit unlikely!
If it were me I would like to make a shortlist and know the full details of each telly on my list before even setting foot inside a dealer. That way there less likely to try and flog you some discontinued model or some dodgy cheap rubbish!0 -

That's what Sony will tell you as they have decided LCD is the way to go. Pioneer and Panasonic (among others) are still knocking out great Plasma displays though!0
