New Build - Prices of White Goods

Options
Hiya,

Me and my girlfriend are going through the process of buying a house. Its took us months going backwards and forwards between various developers trying to get the best deal for our money and getting the house that is right for us.

We finally decided to go ahead and buy with Persimmon Homes. After receiving confirmation of our lending capabilities we set about getting the house for the price that was right for us!

Being a qualified Architectual Technician and having previously worked for a building company for 6 years, i had a reasonable idea of how much the houses cost to build etc..

We agreed on a price and paid the reservation fee of £250.

We now have a couple of month to wait until the house is completed, which luckly gives us time to save.

Persimmons have gave us a list of optional extras that we can pick and choose from. Some are reasonable and some are ridiculously priced!

So now comes the reason for me posting on here......

The ridiculously priced items are intergrated kitchen appliances!!

£450 - Oven, Hob and Extract Hood Upgrade from white to stainless steel

£665 - Intergrated washing machine

£950 - Integrated Fridge/Freezer

Total of - £2065!!! OUCH!

Having priced kitchens up at my previous work place, i know Persimmon Homes will get a massive discount from kitchen suppliers. Sometimes upto 50% if not more!

Has anyone cut a deal with a developer for intergrated white goods? they wouldnt include they in the price of the house, so i want to try and haggle a bit and get a discount on the appliances atleast!

Or the other option is to buy the appliances ourselves and get the builder to fit them for a price or fit them ourselves?

Any advice/info would be great!

Thanks
Adam

Well I'd not take the upgrade from white to silver on the cooker, I'd keep the standards then buy my own. Depends on the quality, but in Wickes at the min you can buy a stainless steel oven and gas hob for £199 anyway. Add £60 for an extractor, and thats nearly £200 less and you can sell the ones you got with the house on ebay.

Actually, the rest of it is a joke too. Do they still give you the cupboards to hide the stuff in, just no the appliances? If so I'd buy myself and get exactly what you want, rather than what they make the most £ on.

    I'd buy them myself

An integrated oven and hob, stainless steel, Hotpoint from B&Q this weekend is £279, glass hoods I'm sure they do for £69 or £89? For £450 you'll get something lovely.

Integrated fridge freezers you can pick up for £300, integrated washing machines I personally don't believe in - they tend to be expensive and the drum capacity is much smaller than a slot in. But again, you can get them much cheaper than that and they won't be exactly the same as your neighbours!

Most electrical suppliers will fit for you. I wouldn't even barter with Persimmon - I'd go out and find the exact appliances to suit me, my style and my needs. If you are even thinking about it, it's a no brainer.

My local Wickes (Stafford) def had these 2 for £199:

No idea on quality, but can't really grumble for the price.

It was in the paper, I don't have a link but they are always in stock at the branches, tehy come in a box together. It's 15% off this weekend, so until they close this evening. Paper said £279 for the electric hob with the 15% off, they do gas as well - we're off to buy one for the inlaws later as we've put them in a few houses already. They tend to alternate between hotpoint and whirlpool.

Can't find it on their website - it is officially the worst website in the world - can never find what you're looking for and they've been selling the pack for years.

    Thanks for the replies.

After having a quick look at what intergrated appliances are out there, it makes sense to buy our own and fit them. Although the deciding factor is how much they will decide to charge us for the housing. We know they normally only leave a space for a fridge freezer and space for a washer. So if they had to get a base unit and door front to be used with intergrated appliances they wont do it for free!
  • I remember when we moved into our new house, the house came with everything AEG bar a washing machine, when we asked how much that would be, the builders quoted £800 - we went with hotpoint!!

Well im waiting for the sales advisor to come back to the sales office on friday and ill see what can be done. If they can provide the housing it would save us a fair bit!

Ill update when ive spoke to her.
