OS Daily Thread - Monday 31st August

Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Bank Holiday Monday! It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.
Morning all!

Molly - Glad Squeak is doing well.
Hester - Hope you feel better today
Salopman - somehow cleaning on a Bank Holiday seems a shame!
Aussie - I like the odd game of JewelQuest too.
Redruby - last year I both froze whole chillis and also threaded a huge amount onto cat gut and hung them in the window til they dried (probably would have dried faster in a airy shed) and then chopped them up and have been using them all winter - cos the seeds were included we only need a pinch to add a real zing to the cooking! we also made this Chilli jam which tastes fab with cheese or cold meats.

Chilli Jam
12 large fresh chillis finely chopped
2 large red onions, finely chopped
3 fat cloves of garlic, finely chopped
2 inches fresh ginger, grated (or finely chopped but I find grating easier)
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons sugar
2 tablespoons sherry vinegar
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 large red onions, finely chopped
3 fat cloves of garlic, finely chopped

2 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons sugar
2 tablespoons sherry vinegar
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
-
Slit the chillis lengthways, and decide whether you want it extra hot by leaving the seeds in or not! Put them in a saucepan with the onions, garlic, ginger, oil and sugar. Bring the heat up gently until the oil starts sizzling, and then cook on a medium-low heat for about ten to twelve minutes, stirring occasionally until the sugar starts to caramelize.
-
Add the vinegar and stir to deglaze. Continue to cook until the liquid evaporates and then mix in the oyster sauce, and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Season, then pack into clean, sterilised screw top jars.
-
Allow to cool and then keep in the fridge. Or you can freeze it in a suitable container. It keeps for about 10 days in the fridge. Something went wrong with it once and it was way too runny so I just used it as a chilli sauce and dip.. *chuckles*
Jayward - glad you enjoyed them!

Churchmouse - I have THIS recipe that you can make with courgettes sliced lengthways too instead of marrow if you have a glut.

We had a roast turkey crown from Iceland for sunday lunch - it was only £4 and fed us both with enough for a sandwich tomorrow. We had carrots from the garden with it. The sun disappeared after midday and it was rather wet so I ended up sorting through paperwork on my desk. My OH drove all the way to M&S to find they had already sold out of the 'Dine in for £10' offer that was running til Monday apparently. That's why he ended up in Iceland buying a turkey crown and frozen sprouts!
My Bank holiday will be quiet I am guessing. I managed to get the WM on before Tris logged on, so I am settled now with some cornflakes and a banana.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the Bank Holiday whatever you are doing. Warm gentle
for anyone who wants one!

Morning peeps
i woke up at half past four for some strange reason and i`ve not managed to fall back to sleep so i thought that i may as well get up.
DH is already up and will be leaving soon to go fishing and is taking both of the houndies with him so i shall be taking advantage and having a good clean through the house.
The bm is on and when it`s finished i shall make some pizza bases for the freezer and maybe some breadcakes too as DH has just used the last of them. The washing machine is about halfway through the cycle but i`ve no idea as to whether the clean washing will be able to hang out on the line or not - too early to tell atm, the weather is cloudy and a bit windy so hopefully it will stay dry.
Redruby - I sliced my chillies into a huge tub and popped it into the freezer, the next lot are almost ready so i shall just bag and freeze them whole i think we tend to use quite a lot of chilli so no danger of them still being there next year
I have my freezer inventory to type up and a house insurance renewal to sort out to so quite a bit to do today, the young houndie and i went blackberrying yesterday afternoon and we gathered four and a half pounds altogether :j so blackberry and apple jam here we come
I`m looking forward to a nice peaceful afternoon in the kitchen with the radio on and delicious aromas spreading through the house.
Hope that everyone has a lovely bank holiday.
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0 -
Morning. Grey day here.
Well done on the fruit picking. I have not bothered this year. Cannot seem to find the time or sunshine to get any. I made 4 gallons of blackberry wine from last years pickings. It will have to be elderberry this year as they are easier to pick.
Bank holiday and it's cold and wet here. I am working so I don't mind either way as double time seems to make the work day go so much better!
So tomorrow is September and summer is over! Where has the year gone?
I have beetroot to do something with, Corn on the cob to pick and freeze, plenty of beans still, cabbages, parsnips. The rest.... well the cool wet weather put an end to that.
Have a nice day folks, CheersNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Morning all,
Rained all night last night. Woke up to grey skies most of the day but it's been sunshine since 3pm. Cold though. DS2 left today. DH drove him to the station. I asked him to buy me some vitamins on the way home at the large chemist. At IGA on the island I thought they were pricey at $18 for 50. He bought me a bottle that was $47 for 50. They must have gold dust in them. He got his ear chewed as you'd expect.
Made a loaf of bread, cleaned out the bathroom and tidied the pantry. After lunch I looked at the car cover I'm altering for a friend. I had to call her & she's taken it to measure it again. I'm really out of my depth in altering it but she won't take the hint. We've had a few visitors pop in today so been busy chatting. That's OS isn't it?
Off to Bingo tonight. DH is feeling much better this week & feels he'll be back at work on Friday. Hope you all have a lovely day. Sounds it's a holiday for some. ByeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeDon't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0 -
Good morning OS lovelies, haven't posted for ages but I desperately need to get back on the OS wagon
so here I am
Need to make a birthday cake today (chocolate and orange), sew DD's name into her uniform, run round with the vac, and clean the downstairs windows.
Last year I started to knit a Cinderella topsy turvy doll for my niece, but didn't get anywhere near finishing it. So my plan is to get it finished for this Christmas - wish me luck!!
Dinner tonight will be pie, chips and mushy peas.
Diva thanks for the chilli jam recipe - as it happens I have a load of HG chillis.
Sunnyday - enjoy your afternoon in the kitchen
N9eav - I like double bubble
Aussie - $47 for vitamins
Have a great day everyoneSquares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0 -
Hello lovely OS folks
I haven't posted on this thread for aaaaagggggesbut it's so great to see most of the same names still here ... as well as a few new ones
We're having rubber chicken week. I didn't have any potatoes so couldnt have a roast yesterday, but did chicken pasta salad for lunch and chicken pie for tea. Today we're having pancakes for b/fast, out for lunch and chicken soup for teaI made some lovely chicken stock with the carcass - have got one lot for the chicken soup and another in the freezer for a rainy day
House work wise I'm pretty on top of things(wasn't saying that at this time yesterday when you couldn't see the kitchen sink for dishes ). We have been fostering rescue dogs over the summer holidays and a few of them haven't been house trained and have had accidents on the carpet .... thank crunchie for bicarb!! It has saved the day completely ... as although I'm sure my house smells a bit doggy, it does def not smell of dog wee.
Where can you buy bicarb of soda in bulk? I have got through LOADS of the little tubs which isn't very economical
Need to go blackberry picking ... we got some a week or two ago and I washed them when we got home but there were still quite a few little maggots on them and when we woke up the next morning loads of them had gone mouldy
Hope everyone has a great day.

Morning everyone.
Very cloudy here, H told me forecast said sunny intervals but I think they are being optomistic with that one!
BM is on and I have a chicken in the oven already that I shall pick apart later. We're not having chicken for tea but I need the meat for the rest of the weeks meals (we eat so much chicken). I'd normally buy chicken breasts too but I can't afford to go to Costco yet and I am not buying them from the supermarket.
Rubbish sleep as DS came into our bedroom. Turns out he'd wet the bed so at 3am me and H were stripping it and re-making it. DS was still awake after 4am but DD gave me a lie in til 6.45am so that was something!
DD took her first steps yesterday! :T Unfortunately H missed it as I was round at my parents. She did it twice and I've not been able to encourage her to do it again. That will probably be it now :rotfl:
Right off to check out the rest of yesterdays thread and Flylady. Might be bank holiday but I still need to do some cleaning
Have a good bank hol OS or not. Hugs to those that need them.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

Morning All! There's blue sky here but I don't know how long it'll last.
Up earlier than intended as dd thought it was today shes starting school not next week- I hope she remains excited about it.
Mum is coming at 9 as we are going to netto for sugar thats on offer just today. Hope they've got it-you can only have 5 each, mum wants as many as possible and wants to get some for a friend whos been ill so I'll probably have 2 and the rest of mine'll be for her friend. I think theres some other things on offer too.
Hoping it doesn't rain as I'm trying to persuade mum to go blackberrying as well. I want to make some jam but strain the seeds-does that make it jelly? Will I need pectin or will it set?
Hope to make some more twinks today-possibly putting some grated apple into some to freeze for dd's packed lunches.
Last night I decided that the small book I had for freezer contents needed to be in a big file(real not on the pc, I have no idea how to do that!) so that I could add and delete things more easily. I also sorted out all the possible sandwich fillings and snacks that dd will eat so I could plan her lunches for next week. So next weeks meal plan lunches for us both and all teas is also done.
I was supposed to be doing my ironing but I pulled my neck a bit at work and it was quite sore last night, so I still have a mountain of ironing to do! I now have plenty of time in the evenings though as I'm on annual leave this week and most of next so don't have to get up at 5.30 for nearly two weeks.
Sorry 've really waffled on this morning.
I hope everyone has a good day.July grocery- 24.40/220. NSD-1/3.

Morning:j
First of all, I have just been looing at yesterdays thread and want to say thank you for your messages re the difficult summer hols with N, and my MRI scan......it does make a big difference and always bolsters me up a bit to hear I am doing a good job with him....even when I am on a downer and feel I am floundering away not knowing if I am doing the right thing...so thank you:A
He managed to stay at the boys party on Sat but did not join in with any of the children:rolleyes: he found they had magnetic numbers on their fridge like his at home and he set a "clock" up on there and flapped. He was happy in his own way.
Today we are going to get him to a softplay to burn some energy off...it is pouring down so no chance of getting out anywhere else.
Yesterday we had Lamb shanks from "Fays family Food"...they were absolutely gorgeous:D
We also had several autistic "lectures" about colours of toilet seats and automatic door closers.........he also wanted to know if all boys willys had a "cover" over them:eek::eek::rolleyes::o:rotfl:.
Today we will be having HM chicken pie, mash and peas.
It is feeling really chilly today ....am loving it as it means autumn is coming...I love autumn and winter:j
Taplady well done to DS2 on doing some work at the hotel....it must have been a big day for him so well done to him for coping with it.
Bitsy hope you got a bit of rest yesterday after being up so early...bloomin kids:rotfl:0 -

A very dull grey day here and not expected to improve. Not too much to do today. Just a good tidy up. I've got to go and get more silicone sealer for the flat downstairs as she has a leak around her huge wooden framed window. As rain is expected this afternoon, that will be an early trip to the shop.
Tea tonight will be corned beef hash, sprouts and another veg as yet undetermined. Easy to make and we both like it a lot. I may make some cream of mushroom soup as I have mushrooms to use up. I need to look up the recipe I like on the net as I don't have it in my files. It was in the magazine Cooking Light years ago.
DH is working today which means double time and a day in lieu. :T He also thinks it makes the day easier knowing that.
Hugs to those feeling poorly, sad or just if you'd like one.

Morning all!
Grey and gloomy here! Got back from a couple of days camping yesterday and have now got a cold! Pah! Still we had a good time, we went to a Haven site near Exmouth, equipped with our trusty tent, unfortunately we managed to forget to pack any mallets (usually have 3 in the tent bag so girls can whizz round hammering in pegs whilst ds and me put the tent up), so god bless the many happy campers who helped us!
Have booked a long weekend break for next year in a caravan as a treat for the kids! Was so heavily reduced if we booked whilst there that worked out marginally more than camping! Will still be camping out during the long summer hols, but will be nice to get away in June - added oh onto our booking, he didn't faint when we asked him to come away with us, so prob a good sign!
Just about to book a hotel for our break next week in France - done in an mse way of course, £1 flights each way and a reduced price hotel! Hoping for sunshine so we can have cheese, bread and wine picnic lunches.
OS stuff today will involve washing and drying clothes, sorting out school stuff so we are ready for Weds and Thurs returns, general cleaning and tidying up of all the stuff that has taken over the sitting and dining rooms over the summer and a big sort out of the food cupboards - argh!
I have a horror of empty cupboards, but even I have to concede that I have rather a lot of tins of toms - well they were on offer and we use loads, so made sense to buy them whilst cheap and reduce future shopping bills! So need to find a storage space for them and also for the pasta sauces I stocked up on - yeah I know they aren't very OS, but they're 2 for £1 in Asda at the mo, and handy when in a rush - always good to have a few emergency quick items I think, for those times when OS cooking just gets too much! I love cooking but sometimes even I have enough of it! Though I'm looking forward to getting the SC going on lots of stews and stuff again for the colder weather.
Had a lovely veg curry last night, with chappattis and onion bhajees, as always there is lots left over - I just can't seem to cook in small quantities, so will be portioning and freezing that up. OH has begged for some hm ready meals for his freezer, so will drop off some of the curry and some chilli from my freezer later for him. Think I've now got over my fear of cooking for a chef - well almost!
Lunch today will be hm veg soup, mainly to use up the odd bod bits of veg in the fridge, served with hm rolls. Dinner was going to be a roast, but forgot to get any meat out of the freezer, doh! So will have a squizz around to see if there is any cooked and pre sliced meat in there that I can use instead, if not we shall be have lasagne or pizza I think, or poss cottage pie as I have plenty of mince and the weather is so gloomy that a nice hot comfort meal would go down well.
Need to make some more yoghurt and hobnobs as well, else the lunchboxes are going to look a little empty!
But first time for another cuppa and a read back! Have a good day all xxxGC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000
