Just off the phone to John Lewis regarding an order I placed on Sunday for a vacuum cleaner and a coffee machine. Although my credit card has been debited i phone up tonight to find that nothing is in stock AT ALL! Even though when I put it all into my basket there was plenty available. I am absolutely P*ssed off with them.
Anyone else had these problems with them?
Had exactly the same problem with Boots and also empire.

Are these items easily obtained elsewhere? If so you're entitled to buy them and claim the difference in price from J.L. They've formed the contract by taking payment and subsequently breached it, so are liable.
Check that payment has actually left your bank account/credit card and isn't just 'pending'.0 -
Hmm. Having an almost identical problem with Comet. Ordered a tv from their website on 27/12 and today Customer services rang to say that the televisions are out of stock - do I want a refund or to order an alternative? I asked for the next model up for the same money but they refused.
I spoke to my local trading standards office today and they say there is nothing to be done.
Is there anywhere else I can go for advice?Peek-a-boo0 -
Trading Standards apply and enforce the law. It is unlikely that they will be wrong, so no point getting "advice" anywhere else really.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0

Really sorry to butt in but can I ask you something?
Something similar happened to me in Argos during the RO craze. Dh and I reserved two items at the Mill Hill store. We paid for the items and then were told they couldnt find them. This is because all their RO stuff was in a special clearance section so could have been easily sold but we argued saying that they were breaching a contract blah blah blah. I have taken it up with trading standards but havent heard from them yet. Did we do the right thing?
many thanks!0 -

Firstly i am sorry about what happened here.
As a partner at John Lewis i must defend the firm. Firstly you must understand that there are always going to be rare occurances where a problem may happen. This happens in all firms not just John Lewis.
Also, at a time of Christmas and the clearance sales, stock is being sold in extremely high quantities and rapidly. As someone cannot be on hand all the time to change stock numbers they sometimes are slightly out of date (as i have found myself). However the fact is that no one meant for that to happen to you and you must acknowledge that it was a mistake and not planned. Please note that the fact that you made the order on Sunday means that no one would have seen it or updated the stock figures until the day after on monday (and im not even sure if the people running the site were in until wednesday)
John Lewis' main aim is customer service and i am sure that the person dealing with this matter will endeavour to help you as much as possible.
May i also add, that if you see the item anywhere for less than what it is sold at in John Lewis then we will price match it for you.
You must realise that no firm, including John Lewis means for these types of things to happen, tey are not planned and not meant to turn out badly. I feel that your title may have been slightly exaggerated (edited for clarity)
I hope your faith is restored in John Lewis once it is sorted out.

ps. i didnt mean to offend the original poster so if it did i apologise!0 -
if the stock sold on the website is only sold on the website surely they could have it so that as each one was sold the "stock level" decreased until it was out of stock.
amazon seem to do this for items when there aren't many left.0 -
Oh well, thanks for the replies, even though I'm not hearing what I wanted to hear.Peek-a-boo0

To be honest, i dont know the exact workings of the John Lewis website. It could just be that the stock levels had been entered incorrectly.
I mean we all know about mis-pricing (dell) and being charged for something we havent got (ebuyer).
Not the first and not the last time this will happen to someone, whatever company is used0 -

This is quite normal with most online stores.
Most online electrical stores do not have live stock control systems, and in fact don't carry any stock of anything, as it's all delivered direct from the manufacturer.
I was caught out this way myself when I ordered a TV from PRC Direct. It took nearly a week for them to call me and let me know the TV would take about 6 weeks to get from the manufacturer. At least no money changed hands, and I was able to cancel my order and get the same model elsewhere in stock at another store.0
