Maybe some strawberries in a windowbox ? Though really I think herbs are a good plan as they last for ages and can make cheap meals taste that bit better and you could maybe pop some lettuce inbetween. Also, when you're doing your finals they are very therapeutic to talk to, relieves stress ! It was my herb window box that I planted whilst a student that started me off on gardening a few, well many years ago.

Is there anything edible that can be grown on a north facing windowsill with no direct sunlight at all?

you can grow tom thumb lettuces they happily grow in a small pot on a window sill they grow quite quickly too so if you have 3 or 4 pots you can replant with another lettuce giving you several through out the year, as they are small they are suitable for 1 or 2 people so none goes to waste, if you have a big window you may be able to grow a tomato plant indoors morrison sell there old flower buckets for 99 p for 8 which make ideal tomato pots, if your going make sure you choose one suitable for container or patio, how about asking the landlord permission to have a window box then you can extend your growing area to outside too

Cut and come again salads - lettuce, endive, beets, kales, depending what you can buy cheap.

Get two of the polystrene pots that soup comes from at the Chinese takeway, or cups. Cut holes the bottom of one and put it inside the other one. Water in the outer pot, soil in the inner one. Plant up and cut after a few weeks. Cut again six weeks later.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • I usually grow basil on the windowsill. Am going to grow some more herbs (and possibly veg) next term. Is it possible for you to get a windowbox? You can grow lots more in one of those.

This UK company does A full NFT, with 400w HPS grow lamp and nutrients for £219.99. It is the cheapest for hydroponic systems in the UK. It took a little long (1 week) for delivery but I am happy. The address is .expensive-hydroponic-kits. con

Very moneysaving bro, but I s'pose it depends on the quality of the customer base in your manor, if you know what I mean...

  • it is not really growing, but you can always sprout seeds for extra nutrients, and to sprinkle on sandwiches, salads etc- I use a plastic storage container with a few holes made in one end of the lid to drain the rinsing water out!

My kitchen window faces almost north, and it doesn't seem to matter too much. I've never had any problems with cress or herbs, anyway. And I germinate most of my seeds on a deep windowsill upstairs, facing the same direction.

Ooo, thanks for this. I am in a similar situation although I will have a back yard suitable for pot plants. :)
