...Well next year, I'm living in a flat with no garden - I literally mean NO outside space - and was wondering whether it was possible to grow anything for the kitchen entirely indoors, like herbs. They'd have to be able grow in a little pot, from the light through windows... any suggestions would be appreciated

I think most herbs will grow on a window cill, the easiest i think, we did as kids is cress.
When you go to buy seeds just see where the packets recommend, if it doesn't work try something different.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

I'm sure you should be able to grown some herbs on your kitchen windowsill. You can find packs of mixed herb seeds (ie parsley, chives, basil, coriander) and maybe just do a very light sprinkling of each on top of a small pot of seed compost. Could even use washed out margarine tubs with a couple of drainage holes put in the bottom

Basil, oregano, chives, parsley, sage and thyme all grow very successfully on the kitchen window (voice of experience here!). Keep picking it to keep it going - it can get very leggy on the windowsill otherwise. If you don't need it immediately, you can always chop and freeze it in icecubes or beat it into softened butter and freeze for later use. Don’t bother with coriander as it tends to bolt.0

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you're keen on growing your own you could give guerilla gardening a go.TOP MONEYSAVING TIP
Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!0 -
I always grow chillis and salad on my kitchen windowsill and have grown mushrooms indoors (in a darkened room) using a ready made kit from the garden centre before now, although I'm not so sure how cost effective the mushrooms were :-)"According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway. Because bees don't care what humans think is impossible" Bee Movie 20070

I'm sure you can find someone willing to sell you a hydroponics system and daylight balanced 150W bulbs for your 'herbs'...:)0

if your window sill is big enough there no reason why you can't grow some tomatoes or lettuce, or even if you have room/large windows a tub of mangetout?0

We have chillis growing on our windowsill, and they seem to be doing fairly well, about 4 little chillis on there and a load of flowers
In the past we have managed various herbs, especially basil. If you can put up a hanging basket outside your door you could grow plum tomatoes, get a hanging variety.
