6 month plan to improve credit rating and get credit card - please help

Hi All,

I am new to credit and really struggling, therefore I hope that I can get some advice from this forum, any help is greatly appreciated.

I can confirm that I have already read the MoneySaving article on the subject of building credit and have read many discussions on the forum but I still do not know how to proceed.

My situation is that I have recently been declined both a Barclaycard Initial and a Vanquis card, therefore I am looking to improve my credit eligibility over the next 6 months before applying again for a credit card.

My circumstance is that I am 25 years old, with a full time job with a decent basic salary, however I have never needed credit before and as a result my credit report is very light. My credit report currently only features my mobile phone contract which has never missed a payment and a current account with an overdraft which is never overdrawn.

I am moving house next week and keen to do whatever I can over the next 6 months at this property to improve my credit rating, this is the first property I will move to where the utility bills will be in my name. Are there any key utility bills that would appear on my credit report? If so is there a risk of me also being rejected for this type of service?

In addition I am considering joining up with a catalogue as I understand these help with credit reports, however what are the chances of me being rejected for one of these even?

Is there anything else I can do over the next 6 months to improve my rating?

Again many thanks for any help.

Moving house will hurt your credit score it is best to apply for new credit before you move and then update the comapny with your new address.

Unless credit facilities are involved (eg. mobile phone), your payment histories with utilities are not normally reported to the CRAs, provided that you are not in arrears ;)

have you actually checked your credit records with all three agencies... just in case there is something incorrect there.

obviously you have applied to be on the electoral roll

    have you tried your bank?
  • I have checked both my Equifax and Experian reports, there is nothing negative on the report as far as I can tell, simply a lack of any credit history (other than an overdraft which is never used and an O2 account).

Regarding JD Williams what are the chances of me being rejected? After all I have only just made my applications with Vanquis/Barclays so there will be recent searches on my report, I’m unsure if it is best to apply now with my current address or next month with my new one.

As for utility bills I thought British Gas now shows up on credit reports, is that not correct? Also I thought there may be a chance that O2 Broadband would appear on the report given the way O2 mobile contracts do…

Finally other than J.D. Williams what else can I pursue in the next 6 months to boost my rating?

    Thanks again

Really? We're no longer with British Gas.
