There are probably at least a thousand people on here that would happily take them off your hands. Me, for one. ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

    Hi looktothefuture,

I have often used out of date tins with no ill effects. If you really don't feel that the food can be of any use to you and your local church etc don't want it, why not offer it on your local freecycle/freegle where you'll almost certainly find someone who will be able to put it to good use.

This earlier thread may give you more ideas:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

Normally I would use out of date tins, but once I ate a tin of fruit cocktail which was several months OOD and I was so ill the next day... I won't make the same mistake again! I'd probably use something which was only a month out though.

i can honestly say i don't know either way if id use them or not

op can you open a tin and check the smell etc and go from there ? it seems a shame to waste them but then again you don't want to be ill either

  • If they were tins of something nice I'd definately eat them (checking before and after opening for any bashes, bubbles, nasty smells or black bits etc).

But these haven't actually cost you anything, so you needn't feel too guilty about not eating them.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • When my mil passed away, we moved into her house... I just added what was in my store cupboard into hers and haven't really given it much thought... that is until today! I cleaned out the larder to make way for some basics I needed and discovered that there are tins in there that go back outdated to 2007...

    Marrowfat Peas exp 2008
Spagetti in tomato sauce exp 2009
Cream of chicken soup exp 2007
    Lentil Soup exp 2009
Cream of mushroom soup exp 2009
    Veg soup exp 2009

Would any of these still be alright to use?

Also there are herbs in there that have outdated... should I just chuck them?

    Hi

the dates on these tins are just best before dates. Unless the tins have 'blown', ie bulging from inside, they will be perfectly fine. The herbs will also be ok (I am assuming these are in jars)
  • Thanks Chips... I wasn't sure because I don't actually eat anything from a tin! Just can't bring myself to even try!

As long as the tins aren;t blown they'll be fine to use.

Sniff the herbs - if they smell distinctly of the herb, they'll be fine; if they smell of old tobacco, compost them :)
