What to do with random tins of food?

Comments

  • There is alot of beans, sausages in beans and random things like breakfasts in a tin! ( why?) and then types of veg in a tin (which I'm totally not a great believer in!)

We don't have a dog or I would be mixing it into pets mince.

I did approach a few churches and they wouldn't take them as they were out of date, the local shelter wouldn't either!

I really don't want to waste all the food in the tins, even if I don't eat it - some of it might still be alright.

Well, you could rinse the sauce off a tin of beans and see if the birds liked them? The veg could just go in the compost. TBH though you're not going to get many takers for tinned foods that have gone out of date by a year....I'll eat stuff that's a bit out of date, but I wouldn't go out looking for it. My only other suggestion is to put it in a box out by the front gate if you're on a road that has a lot of passers-by, with a note saying "Out of date tins...free to good homes" and see what goes. Otherwise dump the contents and put the tins in the recycling.

Does the tin say "best before" or "use by"?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Do yu have any neighbours with dogs
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I took my life into my own hands not long ago when I opened and used a tin of pineapple which had been lurking at the back of the cupboard. It was three years past the best before date and that pineapple-upside-down cake was delicious. Nothing bad happened.

As has been suggested, if you really won't use any of those tins, just pop them outside with a note. Someone will want them. I'd use the tinned veggies in a soup, pie or casserole myself.

put them on freecycle, i'm not fussy about dates and if its free I'd happily throw it away if when I opened it I was dubious of the contents.

Lots of older people buy tinned stuff, probably a throw over from war times (hoarding esp!) although I agree breakfast in a tin sounds pretty horrible. As for 'why' I say that when I see mashed potato in the fridges of supermarkets!
  • I'd second freecycle - I'd snap them up if saw them listed :-D

tinned food is fine to eats ages after its date (personal experience), and i mean years.

like others have said free cycle or just bin it - not ideal but if you wont eat it what else can you do?
