Its not so much the fact she gave her dog away. I can understand why someone would do that. Its the fact she decided to get another dog. If she wanted a dog so much she should have worked on the problems the dog had (if any) or took steps to make sure the dog was never left alone or even in the same room ever until the child got older. The fact she threw the dog away and got a new one is awful regardless of where the dog went.
I think a dog acting funny around a baby is very different to a neighbour having an aggressive dog.
Ok look at it this way. You treat a dog with great respect, walk it twice a day, feed him, care for him, love him. You do everything right. The dog bites your child - you get rid of him. Why should that prevent you from getting another dog?
I have a dog, I dont have him as a pet. For me, the dog is there for security. I got him because OH works away alot and im in the house alone alot with DD. I dont fuss him as much as i could (im not evil, i stroke him, take hime walks, throw him a ball etc) and he is looked after and loved. DD fusses him something rotten, shares her teddys with him and gives him all the attention he wants. BUT if he was to turn nasty, i would get rid of him but i would get another dog, i would just keep the dog and DD seperated. Not all dogs are nasty and not all dogs are nice. They all have their own personailitys and just because the last dog was funny around a child doesnt mean the next one will.
The poster didnt throw the dog away. She gave the dog to a friend who the poster KNEW would care for it. Thats a lot more responsible than other things she could have done. She could have sold him in a newspaper where the dog could have gone to a family who kicked him and mistreated him, she would have drowned him, she could have took the dog to a shelter. Quiet frankly, no matter WHAT the poster would have done, one of you would have complained.
I see my neighbours dog as aggressive, they see him as their family. It has caused many disagreements but they know where i stand and what i will do if he ever does attack. Theres nothing to say he will attack, but prevention is always better than cure. The poster was PREVENTING an accident rather than deal with the aftermass. At the moment the dog is alive and well, should it of attacked the posters child it would more than likely be dead. If the poster treats the dogs correctly then why shouldnt they get another? Sometimes, you can not change an animals temperment. That are ANIMALS after all and will go on instinct, no matter how much training they have had.0 -

Secondly I have never ever been to a RSCPA or Dogs Trust centre where they charge you £8 to look round at the dogs. In fact most RSCPA centres don't let you wander round looking at the dogs. They let you browse a book of the dogs and then bring out the dogs to you that your interested in. So that people pick the dog that is most suited to them rather than the one looking the saddest or cutest at the kennel door. If I was asked to pay £8 to look at dogs to adopt I would go somewhere else.
It was £2 each to go and look at the dogs - there was 4 of them. It was at the South Mimms Centre I believe. My friend lost her dog earlier this year and wanted another as she has always had a dog. So she paid and had a look. However, they should have told her before she went in that she could not have had one anyway - it was clear they were looking for a family pet. I've heard bad things about the RSPCA so would not have gone there myself anyway.
Dogs Trust (not sure what branch) said she could not have a dog or a puppy at all as they had a child under 5.
The thing is, it is families that are looking for pets, most other people are out at work all day and cannot give them the time or are out of work and cannot afford it and this is why there are so many dogs in centres, because people have to go to work because everything is so expensive and then cannot give the time to their animals. It all seems a bit upside down to me.0 -

Much of a dogs behaviour is due to the way its treated. Maybe the dog is "aggressive" around you because your waiting for the slighest hint and your attack it with a pitchfork. The dog never bit her baby at all. If she was worried about the way it acted around the baby she could have seeked help to look at its behaviour or just kept the dog away from the baby. Its maddness to get another dog as if it was a behaviour thing then how does she not know it was something she was doing to make the dog act this way and the new dog is going to do the same. Very few dogs are aggressive or dangerous dogs because of their temperment its normally due to the way they have been trained or the way they are treated. No dog starts off aggressive. Even the "dangerous" breeds. Its just some are more easy to train or condition to be aggressive than others. My dog has been attacked several times by a labador. No-one would think of those sweet Andrex puppies as aggressive.
The fact you on one hand see your dog as security to protect you if the worse happened while you were on your own yet would get rid if it turned on anyone in your family says a lot.0 -
You still going on about it?
Jesus! it's done now, Dee Dee is happy with her new family, so why all the fuss, I could understand if I'd killed her or sent her to a home!
If you bothered to read my past post you will see that in hindsight I was probably a bit overdramatic, and yes I did regret REHOMING HER WITH A LOVING FAMILY!:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -
blue_monkey wrote: »Thank you. Yes we have done all of that within the first week - I even took her to a 2nd vet for a 2nd opinion as I was not happy with the first vet being thourough enough.
She has been given a clean bill of health twice though. I said above she is chipped, all jabs done and insured, tonight she goes 'to school' and it's a family outing because we all have to learn. As you say, what is done it is done. Bless her, I do not think she would get KC registered anyway. :rotfl:
I take her out in the car and she happily sits on the front seat and I try to take her places where it is busy so she get's used to cars, people, kids, bikes, other dogs, the lead, etc... She is fine on the road as outside our house we have no path and a lot of traffic coming past. Hey, my husband even puppy proofed the garden with Man Flu :T. He would normally have been on the chair whinging!! And I've got lots of new 'doggy friends' too. Only people I have found I suddenly have lots of visitors and they are only coming around to see the new dog and not us. FIL called the other day (he never calls) and it was to find out how the dog was. :rotfl:
She has been to the vets as well when she started sneezing and I thought she had something up her nose so I called the vets right away and got an appointment for 20 minutes later. I was a bit concerned and I was (it seems now) probably too hasty but I'd rather her be checked.
I've never had a dog before so I've a few books and I want to make sure I do everything right. But, I think I am doing a good job, we ignore her when we eat and she goes to her bed instead, she is very food motivated so we have been able to treach her basic things such as sitting on command and getting down. I am loving every single minute - even when she chases after the mops and grabs onto it when I am trying to mop up the wee. I've been getting up first so I can take her out for a wee before the kids come down as she is still leaking when excited and she would rather say good morning than go for a wee!!
And when she gets on the sofa and will not look at me for more than 1 second as she knows she is not supposed to be on there and gets off with a big sigh when I tell her to get down. :rotfl: It seems like she has been in the house forever with us now though.
Thank you also for the offer of some help, I will bear that in mind. Can you dust....
Thats good to hear then. She would only be KC reg if the breeder registered her when she was approx 4 weeks old, you would need pedigrees of both parents etc. Its not essential so dont worry about it. Ahh its lovley when puppies are at that age, i have 9 so you can imagine it 9 times over!! They pinch socks out the washing basket and run past and grab the washing of the lines!! I can dust yes and you just reminded me i have to do it! :eek:Theres 2 types of horse owner, a person who owns a horse and a horsey person

So when this dog looks at your baby a bit funny or chews your sofa because you don't have time to exercise it or it goes to toilet on your carpet because you don't have time to toilet train it lets hope you have another friend to dump the dog on?:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0
