So if the fixed rate ends on the 1st of Oct that would be the date to go online and start the switch?

Thank you for your answer btw malc :D

    Hi MrsTine

Switching suppliers can take between 4 and 8 weeks. Therefore, if you don't start the switch until 1 October 2009 there will be a period before the move completes when you are on a tariff which may not be in your best interests.

If you don't contact us your account will automatically be put on the replacement capped deal outlined in the letter we sent you. Although this tariff does not have a cancellation fee prices are higher than other products.

I would suggest going on a cheaper product for the interim period whilst the switch goes through. Either give us a call or switch online. It is quick and easy to change tariffs. What's more, the change takes place immediately.

Also, don't forget there will be no discount given on the final bill following a switch of supplier; so I would time the change to minimise the impact of this.

Hope this is useful. As always, give me a shout if you need any more help. :)

Could you give people some more details about how best to go about this, Malc? I mean, put some flesh on the bones, so to speak. TIA!

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • Hi , I'm currently on Eon's Price Protection 17 plan and have done a comparison through Energyhelpline.com as suggested by martin as it also shows comparisons for switching from my capped rate to other suppliers. I cant be exactly sure of this though as it doesnt detail specific names for the many Eon tarrifs , just " pre July 2008 " which i'm taking as Price Protection 17 ( is that right Malc ? )

To be honest Steaminboot, I wasn't sure myself so I have just spoken to Energyhelpline.

A very helpful chap advised our Price Protection version 17 is actually listed as just Price Protection Oct 2009 on their comparison site. This is the one immediately above the other tariffs ending in October but without a date in brackets.

Hope this is ok Steaminboot. Give me a shout if I can help further. :)

Of course Carmine; more than happy to do this. :)

As you know, we don't give discount on final bills when customers change supplier. Therefore, it is always best to time the actual leaving date so it falls as near as possible to the bill immediately preceding the final bill. That way, the final bill will charge for only a few days usage rather than a possible full quarter.

For instance, if the last bill was at the end of August the next one will be due by the end of November. Therefore, it will be beneficial to time a move so the transfer completes just after the November bill.

However, switching supplier is not an exact science and it is very difficult to judge precisely when an account will transfer over. It generally takes anything between 4 to 8 weeks.

Given this, it may be better to contact the gaining supplier a few weeks after starting the switch. By then, they should be able to give some indication as to when they will take over the account.

Once you have a rough idea of the transfer date, give us a call near this time with up to date meter readings. Ask for a bill to be issued to these readings. As this will not be the final bill it will be discounted.

After this the account will close and a final bill following on from the one previously requested will be issued. This will not be discounted but will hopefully cover the least number of days possible.

Sorry if all this sounds a bit hit and miss but, as you know Carmine, changing supplier is about as predictable as the football pools.

Anyway, hope it fleshes it out a bit. Give me a shout if I can help further.

Hi. Last night i filled in the forms online to switch from Eon to EDF Online 5. As this is going to take 6-8 weeks to switch over, would it be worth going onto Eon's website and changing to another tarrif to prevent being switched over to the R2 deal? Also, if i did so, would the change over be immediate with eon? or would this take 6-8 weeks aswell? Do you know when i should time this? Probably one for the Eon rep...

FWIW i switched to EDF through Quidco who are offering £60 cashback, so hopefull that will make up for losing the final bill discount with Eon.

    Hi katym

    Sorry you are leaving us.

For the period between the end of your current deal and when you leave I would definitely recommend going on to another tariff other than the R2. This will save you money as R2 carries a premium above our standard rates.

You can either switch tariff yourself through our website or give us a call and we will do it for you whilst you are on the phone. There is no delay and the change will go through immediately.

Our website will list the tariffs available along with the terms and conditions.

I would recommend switching tariff on 1 October 2009. That way you will receive the full benefit of your current Price Protection (version 14) tariff. As version 14 was launched nearly 18 months ago the unit prices are now significantly lower than our latest tariffs.

Hope this helps but give a shout if you need more info. :)

It might not take that long, I switched to EDF not from EON, on 20th August received a letter today saying the electricity will be switched on 12 September with gas to follow about 10-14 days latter.

Sorry you haven't received the letter about the end of your current tariff yet. These have been sent out over a three week period with the last postings scheduled for the next couple of days.

Hopefully you will receive yours shortly.

As Malc stated above, everyone who was on the old capped Price Protection 17 tariff should have had a letter saying they were being moved onto Price Protection R3. We've been moved onto PP R3 without receiving a letter first  I've just logged onto my account and can't find the actual prices of PP R3 listed so I've no idea what I'm paying now. Can anyone help?

Because E.on cocked up our switch to them last year, we didn't actually get charged by them until December even though I switched to them at the beginning of August - is this why we didn't get a letter?

What with this and finding out recently that E.on let other customers potentially view my personal details on their website because of a technical problem, then I'm totally hacked off with E.on. They also recently overcharged me on my direct debit. Good customer service my armpit!

Please could somebody tell me what the rates are for gas & electricity on Price Protection R3 so I can do a comparison with other providers? I don't want to wait until my next bill to find out! Thanks!

I got an email from MSE the other day saying that Eon have dramatically reduced their capped tariff. I like Eon (sorry Minerva69!) so am interested in this.

Does anyone have any considered view if capped or non-capped is the way forward?!

    Hi minerva69,

Sorry you haven’t received the letter, there were a few customers who’s letters were delayed as Malc has mentioned.

The new prices you are on, R3, should be showing on your online account when you use the ‘Switch Your Product/Tariff’ facility. If they aren’t showing yet contact us to investigate this for you.

I can’t post the unit rates on the forum as it is against the rules, however if you email or call E.ON the prices will be available. You can then compare with other tariffs and suppliers.

    Brian :)
