JackieW - I freeze my fruit and then use it in the juicer.

MrsGibbs - your children are really lucky to get that fruit and I would defo go for it if we had that option - I've asked the school to do it but it all seems like too much hassle for them - although they give free fruit up to Year 2 after that they get nothing.

I've just spent another £12 in MrT - not going to any shops tomorrow!!

I've just clicked the multi quote button but when I want to post a reply and use the multi quotes I can't work out how to show them - can someone help me please as I seem to have a thick head on at the mo - thanks

Just back from the shopping expedition.
I took £65 and added up in my head as I went around, but rounding everything up as I filled the trolley.

    I spent £58.17.

    Including...
a free range chicken, 1kg mince, smoked bacon joint, 18 sausages.
Also stocked up on loo roll and washing tablets.
Plenty of fruit and veg and flour, yeast etc for pastry and bread.

Now I need to make up a menu. Is there a separate thread for that?

Just popping in to report the weekend spends - £39 in Mr T's.
Came in just under my informal £40 a week limit but it was a week that included laundry products, toilet rolls etc.
I have a meal plan for the week and won't need anything other than a bit more milk mid week.
Off to try to devise how to make things stretch even further

Hi everyone. Been in Brum visiting DD2 and helping with plans for her wedding in Dec! Stupidly found I didn't pack any deodorant so I had to buy one in Boots at a cost of £1.99 - have added to my total.

Have spent today doing a garage sale which was for village charities and have been popping in and out to cook. Supper is a piece of (very small!)beef which I have put in the slow cooker with some tomatoes, onions and mushrooms and the tail end of a bottle of red wine that had been sitting on my work top for about 2 weeks! It smells divine. Will be having this with mashed potatoes with parsley, carrots and runner beans all from the garden. I also made a marble cake from a recipe in our paper, but I didn't cook it long enough and the inside had collapsed - so we are going to have that for pud with a bit of ice-cream (I am not throwing it away as it had unsalted butter and ground almonds in it which cost a fortune!)

Hope tomorrow is better here than today - it was freezing in the wind and we had to move our stuff into our garage as it rained a bit too and we didn't want the books to get wet! If it's nice tomorrow I want to do some gardening and some more cooking as I am back to work on Wednesday and won't have so much time. I have winter veg seeds sprouting on my window cill and want to make space to plant them out.

Well I ahd better get off and finish cooking supper before DH starts feeling faint!

    Catch up later

  • Hi guys,
Thanks for all the positive feedback on the 20p fruit issue... I just figure that i'll be saving in the long run as you can't really buy an apple or banana for 20p these days let alone portions of melon/coconut etc.
    I'll be opting in!
The "Hedgerow Jam" sounds good... or should it be "Hedgerow Preserve"??? lol

Just got in to a slow cooked ham with potatoes and veg for tea!!! nom

Mrs M, I am going to try this again. Please put me down for £450. This is for two adults, two FT children, one full and one part time teenager, 4 cats, 2 dogs, 2 chickens and a fish. Excludes alcohol and dirty fags. Spend is usually closer to £600 but I need to get a grip so we can fund house renovations, ad a couple of my (self employed) clients going bust this month.

I have made a record of the freezer contents (rather full luckily tbh :o), need to do store cupboard and embrace the art of meal planning, and use the veg from the garden. It is NOT a bargain buying ''cheap' toms when we have a greenhouse of rotting ones she says in a moment reminiscent of Cider with Rosie. We have also re-discovered the joys of Aldi and Lidl last month and we need to stick to this.

Freezing fruit juice - we do this. We have three mature apples, one pear and younger espalier ones, I juice them and freeze them as they are not really eaters. Can be cloudy but taste just as nice. My lovely mother does all her apple juice this way and uses it for the next 12 months.
