Population Explosion, biggest rise in 50 years

The UK population grew by 408,000 in 2008 - the biggest increase for almost 50 years, according to the Office for National Statistics. The total number of people passed 61m for the first time, with changes in birth and death rates now a bigger cause of growth than immigration.

The numbers of people arriving minus those leaving actually fell by 44%.
Minister Phil Woolas said migrants were coming for short periods, contributing to the economy and then going home.

The UK population grew more in 2008 than at any time since 1962, when it rose by 484,000.

Latest ONS figures also show:
  • There are now a record 1.3 million people aged over 85, making up 2% of the total
  • There were 791,000 babies born in 2008, an increase of 33,000 on 2007
  • Half of that increase were to women born overseas, but living in the UK
  • The population is now growing by 0.7% a year, more than double the rate in the 1990s and three times the level of the 1980s. .

No wonder house prices are rising so fast..... :rotfl:

It would be interesting to find out if the population of Aberdeen is increasing.

Because we all know about different regions and all that..............

well why are there thousands of empty unsold homes in my area?

.....and yet hundreds of families in temporary accomodation?

that leads my simple brain to conclude that, yes, more homes will be needed, but not at todays prices

And every time I bang on about it, the bears deny it is happening, or deny it has an impact.

In 2008, in the middle of a recession, the UK population grew by 408,000 people.

That is almost the same as adding a city the size of Manchester to the UK every year.

!!!!!! do people think will happen to house prices!!!!!!

Are we building a new Manchester every year to house them? No, of course we aren't.

Prices must rise as long as we add a Manchester's worth of people every year, but only build an Aberdeen's worth of houses to put them in.....

It's the simplest thing in the world to understand, and yet so many otherwise intelligent people create fanciful theories trying to justify why it won't happen.

It is no surprise of the increase with Government paying people to get into a breeder program.

What is needed is the scrapping of the child trust fund.

That's great. I reckon about thirty years before they start buying houses. And never, if they were to continue to rise like the last few years.

Actually in thirty years they can probably have mine.

edit: this looks like a joke post. But concealed within, are more truths about the market than you will get in twenty pages of Hamish's stuff.
