i had this done 5 years ago and now have to wear glasses again
. my dh and i got it done on the same day for free (optimax opened a new clinic in ipswich and did it for nothing as the press were there). for me it didnt go too well. they basically undercorrected me and i didnt heal too well - apparently i am much more sensitive to light than i should be (or thats what optimax told me anyway). they did offer to re do the treatment (lasek) but i said no as by this time i couldnt stand anything near my eyes (8 months of eyedrops kind of does that to you lol). However it was great that i could see much better than before although i did not get perfect vision. this march i went or an eye test and had to give in and get glasses again and its lovely having perfect vision again. My DH however had no problems and still has perfect vision and he recommends it to all and sundry lol. The only thing we both agree on is that our night vision was/is still appalling.
Regarding the pain - there is only really a gritty feel in your eyes and straight after the procedure any light is too strong but after a few hours its fine. the procedure itself is not painful at all just a little strange! good luck whatever you decide.0 -
and at 36, is it worth it as the eyes deteriorate as you get older Windybut we aware that everyone does need reading glasses anyway after age 40 ish onwards anyway, quote]
I've just got my first ever pair of reading specs at the age of 60.
DS (26) recently consulted his GP re laser surgery, the GP said he had 2 friends who'd had it done. One was successful, the other wasn't - said he couldn't expand on 'wasn't' for ethical reasons and couldn't advise DS, just give him some facts about the surgery. On weighing it up DS decided not to go ahead - quite rightly he's not prepared to take a risk with precious eyesight.
What's so wrong with specs anyway? Vanity, vanity, all is vanity...:rolleyes:0 -

i was considering laser eye surgery, and went along to a consultation, and as one eye is much poorer than the other, they said it would be best not to risk it, cos if something went wrong, i would have worse sight thean i do ,also because i drive so much, they said night vision would be very poor.
in a way i was upset not to be able to have it done, but not as upset if i had paid out that money and something had gone wrongenjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0 -
I'm sure optimax and some guy selling on ebay will give an unbiased view0

My sister in law has had it done (she's now 34), however she still has to wear glasses to drive at night.
The nearer you are to 40 when you have it done, then there's a good chance that within a couple of years you will still need to wear glasses as the eyes continue to deteriorate.0 -

The guy is in fact ''the owner of Optimax''The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane — Marcus Aurelius0 -
I had my -6 with astigmatism corrected in 1993 other eye was -2 I am now 46 and only 6 months ago felt the need to get a check as I get tired driving at night and I often do this for my job. I have some glasses if I need them, they are very weak, I read without specs and for all intents and purposes I don't need to correct my vision for normal activities.
I went from needing glasses (or contacts) all the time I was awake to no need for anything and I have had this for 15 years. When I had it done it was new and painful, they used to scrape the outer cover of the eye away with a scalpel, now they cut a flap. I have no regrets and even if it was still painful I would do it again in a flash.
As for people reporting their optician/opthalmists have reservations I think it would be like turkeys voting for christmas as they lose a customer everytime someone has this, although financial matters were not the first consideration for me it's certainly saved me a chunk of money over 15 years.
Like anything else in life it has it's risks but for me it was worth it, everyone has to weigh up the risk and decide if they think it's worth it for them.0
