Whenever I speak to anyone from a company e.g. bank etc, or for example at the doctors surgery it's always my full surname, it never gets shortened. We have a hyphen and it's hubby's name than mine, just sounded better that way!

I loved my maiden name (was actually my mum's surname not my father's) and it made it so much easier for me- I saw it as adding a name rather than changing it! I would have felt like I was losing abit of my identity (silly, I know!) but I wanted to recognise hubby's name as well so this was the best thing for us, and like the idea we have started a new name and branch on the family tree (providing we have a boy or like minded girl of course ;))

Hmm you've given me something to consider now! :D

It is the easiest (no deed polls) and the most accepted way.

I have a daughter from a previous relationship and she has my surname but when i get married she is changing hers to my partners surname as we have a little boy with that name, She is almost 5 and so excited about it all!
I cant wait to change my name as i hate my surname, It was the cause of bullies at school as they thought it was funny! Although my new surname is longer and sounds nice no one ever knows how to spell it as it has a silent Q and people question wether your spelling it correctly:rolleyes:

Its really personal choice these days, some folk get married and never change the name or the husband has changed to the wifes name. If you feel that strong about it being part of your life then keep it as a middle name:)

  • I didn't change my name after I got married, as it was 'my' name and just wanted to keep it.

However, a couple of years later when we were thinking about about children, I decided I would like both of us and any future children to have the same name.

I did use the situation to my advantage though, DH had wanted me to change my name since we got married so I said I would do it if he gave up smoking so he did. I changed my name by deed poll and kept my maiden name as a middle name.

Now we all have the same name, including our beautiful LO and DH doesn't smoke - result :T

I'll be keeping my title and maiden name for my professional work as I have publications under that name - I want people to track me, even if I keep my title people won't know who I am with my fiance's surname, but I will be a Mrs outside of work!

Hmm Ive considered adding my maiden name to my middle name, but am wondering if anyone will ever see it as my current middle name isnt on anything.

Im looking forward to taking future hubbies name, but will be sad to lose mine. We are the last in the line of my surname (dad has no relatives) and cant see either of my brothers ever populating (youd agree if you met them..)

    Hyphenating both surnames.
  • This is a bone of contention in our household as I love my (sur)name and want to keep it, as some of you have said - it's part of my identity and I've had it a while!

My h2b really wants me to change to his. His isn't horrible, it's just not mine if you know what I mean.

I also have no brothers or sisters with the name - my little bro was killed some years ago, so I feel even more sad at losing it.

I guess we have a good couple of years to "discuss" it though. It's good to read your thoughts about this.
