Is heavyheart back to defend herself through this barrage? If not, I suggest we all leave this topic well alone as all this backbiting is really rather unproductive.[/QUOTE]

And, from the very limited amount of information we have been given about the true situation with the in laws, my course of action would be in all honesty to sell the house (or flat) that the poster currently lives in, & uses the proceeds to clear the £140k + debt.

Then she can either move in with the inlaws (if the house is in her name there should be no 'legal' problem with this, although it might be a bit frosty in the evenings!)

Or rent privately & take a long, very hard look at her & her partners spending. Perhaps drawing up a real budget & planning ahead would help but that is all a personal method, not everyone works well to strict plans, but in her case, I would strongly advise it.

Also, I noticed that she mentioned that she has a Saga card? well, unless I'm much mistaken, thats only available to the over 50's? so what age would that place her in laws at? as someone brutally honestly (but they didn't get shouted down) pointed out, they are clearly getting on a bit so it shouldn't be too long til 'their' flat is free. & when it is, the poster can either move it, or sell it and put the proceeds into whatever they want (hopefully not paying off more debt!)

The first & most important thing that this poster has to do & has already been mentioned several times, is to stop spending! I'm sorry, its not rocket science. stop spending, you've over spent drastically for years now so unfortunately its time to pay the price & cut back & make do! I'm not talking about silly things like a can of coke, I'm talking about no more holidays, or theatre trips. no more unnecessary expenditure, like cinema trips no more new clothes, no expensive, unhealthy ready meals etc, at least for a couple of years. It will be hard, it will be unpleasant, but I'm sorry, you should have thought about that when you were spending it all before you had it. Theres no 'nice' way to put it. Thats the truth of the matter.

    So;

Sell the place you currently live in, use that money to pay your debts, then keep your nose clean & live within your means. thats it. I think you are much luckier than many in that you have a property you can sell to pay off your debts.

Maybe you should read whats been written before casting aspersions.

An old social work saying goes "if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem" . With this in mind, I have nothing further to add except to say

Heavyheart, if you are there, my thoughts are with you, and I hope that things are getting better for you x feel free to come back to us at anytime, some of us are worried about you xxxx
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind

Yes, that was suggested. There have been a lot of suggestions about what to do with both properties.

The stumbling block would appear to be this contract and how legally binding it is. This is what I don't understand they've already spent £20k on legal fees trying to get the parents evicted. If the parents are still there wouldn't that indicate the contract is solid?

The contract says they are permitted to live there without inteference from the owners. So if the contract is legally binding they wouldn't be able to move in.
  • I think having reviewed a lot of the latter part of this thread there are several things evident. Yes, there are strong opinions on both sides and, yes, this is a discussion forum so we expect people to have differing views. What i dont think is helping is that this has now gotten personal. It needs to be remembered that this board, by it's very nature, where people looking to pay off debt congregate. I would say that if people decide to bring the "story" behind the debt here, there must be an acceptance that people will then discuss and present their views.

However, we are all here to get people out of debt and i would ask that we now set our personal views aside and look at ways to help people tackle their debt issues if this thread is to continue

    January Embers,

Yes, I am completely covered for all eventualities, thank you for asking.

nocashkate, banks are businesses, just like supermarkets, are you telling me that when you go round sainsburys (or where ever) you put in your trolley, one of every single product that they sell?? of course not! because you choose not to!! You have the intelligence & attitude to select only what you need & want.

Like I said before, its all about choices.
