Otherwise, bring winter foliage in to brighten the place up, make sure the house is aired and not stuffy, have something in the house that smells nice, change the linen frequently and keep the place tidy so your not depressed by pile of things to do
Try to get outside at least once a day
Personally the above works for me too. I love lamplight instead of a main, overhead light too, it makes the rooms look and feel cosy. Thrifty doesn't have to mean miserable - eg homemade cake/biscuits and hot choc is a cheap and very cheerful treat in the evening.0 -
i love winter.
don't get me wrong living on the isle of wight where we are surrounded by beautiful beaches. there is nothing nicer than on a hot summers day waiting till about 6pm when tide is out , taking kids down beach playing for hours, going to the sand park then buying fish and chips and watching tide come back in.
BUT, winter changes the beauty of everything, the wood's look more amazing the beach is just gorgeous on a cold frosty morning, we wrap up like mitchelin men and head off for winter walk's. The cold, wet , windy days and nights when you can snuggle or just turn lights off and watch the rain beating against the window. doing the school runs with wellies on jumping in every puddle and knowing ur gonna get soaked so might as well enjoy it.
I love it.
as for xmas, the xmas tree lights are just so gorgeous. mine usually go up nov as can't wait any longer, lol.
I'm definatly a winter person.0 -

Not a very Romantic reply (sorry) but I've just insured our central heating (boiler etc). Its just over £13 a month, includes a boiler service. Its just a little bit of peace of mind for something we rely on so much. Winter HA, bring it on!! ; )
ps - also big on blankets/lined curtains etc too...0 -

Anyone who likes this thread might like the Preparing for Winter thread too. It is full of interesting stuff and although it is a long one it is well worth reading!
I ploughed through it during quieter spells at work and learnt all sorts of things.

I love the dark nights, candles lit, lamp on and feeling cosy, we are on holiday in Nov and get back 2nd Dec so I'm am going to try and keep the heating off until then, only use the fire in the lounge on a morning and evening0

I also like collecting bits of wood to burn during those long winter evenings; whilst planning next year's allotment and garden growing plan.0

Sorry I know this is an old thread but I happened across it and I loved so many of the answers I had to comment. I do lots of the ones mentioned. Autumn and winter are without doubt my favourite seasons (sorry, call me weird but I hate the heat) so I am in my element. Even in a house with no working boiler as we are at the moment.
I love blankets and throws; hot chocolate; candles; lamps and/or the mock flame lights on our fire in the lounge; closing the curtains and curling up watching DVDs, listening to music or reading; wrapping up in several layers and going out for a bracing walk; sitting in the garden wrapped in blankets and watching the birds on the feeder. I love it all.
I think being frugal/money saving/skint in winter is as depressing as you want it to be or not. It's not all about turning up the heating and having bright lights on. Think of it this way - why make winter feel like summer...?0 -
A lot of emphasis on christmas, but i find going through all the celebrations with gusto...bonfire night, holloween, (we do thanksgiving too) then advent then chrsitmas. Ny, its just a hop and a skip to Chinese new year and valantines day, then its almost over. Celebration need not be huge, but eating seasonally, and not eating those foods out of season, helps too...because ypu look forward to things.0
