upmystreet.com is also a good source of local info about the area in terms of crime rates, school quality, transport links, etc
A quick call to the local council is always a good idea to check on any impending major developments planned for the area.

Great thread! As a first time buyer I've found it very useful. A house I'm looking at at putting an offer in is listed at £245k but after doing my own research from the guidance here I estimate it at around £210-£215 (~85-88% of asking). I'm comfortable with this valuation. I'm just worried that to negotiate to this I'd have to offer even lower which might not be treated seriously. Hmmm!
Also, if you're not sure of the area that you're moving to, in addition to upmystreet, maps.police.uk is a really good resource for checking and comparing crime levels.0 -
