Worth mentioning the excellent (but not free) MobileMe service, which would allow you to see where the phone is on a map, make it make a loud noise, make it display a message (Return me for a reward! Call xxx-xxxx" etc as well as letting you securely erase it.
Not sure whether you can signup after you've lost the phone, but if you've reported it lost/stolen then it wouldn't be accessing the internet anyway.
Good luck,“Official Company Representative
I am the official company representative of Mobiles.co.uk. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"0 -
Probably too late now if it's been IMEI blocked, but did you try calling it once you realised it was missing? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Also - I don't think most mobile phone insurance is covered while you're on public transport (at least it wasn't when I left my phone on a train).0

I am sure you didn't lose it but had you pocket dipped and will therefore need a crime reference number from the Police station to pass to your insurance company for them to process your claim.Cheers
