Even the good old leftie newspaper the Guardian gets it....Government has not properly budgeted for this, having consistently tried to hide the true costs. When considering public sector pay, comparisons are generally made with the private sector, but the costs of pension accrual are not factored in, almost as if they do not exist. Of course pensions are paid many years hence, but the costs are nevertheless real.
A public sector pension is now probably worth about 30% extra salary, but public workers contribute well below 10% to their pensions, and sometimes nothing at all. Taxpayers have to make up all the difference.
Get it yet????:p:p:p0 -
My dear carolt. I can hardly be responsible for everyone else on MSE being wrong and muddle-headed, can I?
Nothing wrong with self interest, I thought that was what the Capitalist system is about.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
this board is just a 'slag everyone of who doesnt agree with me and belittle them', the daily mail readers can have their say but the rest of us are looked down on as idiots and anything we post torn to pieces, whilst the DM readers can only seem to put their point across by resorting to personal insults. Its really quite boring now..
MSE used to be advice, any question or posts are ripped apart, i hope to see the end of this board soon, it makes MSE look bad, its become a breading ground for self righteous trolls0 -
The joy of the public sector is that the more unnecessary a role or department is, the more self-important it feels.
We call it the Public Sector Paradox.
You've hit the nail on the head there. Public sector pensions are not all over-generous. I have a deferred pension myself which I am due to receive in the near future. But it is hardly like winning the lottery, as some seem to suggest.
The reason the overall cost is so high is that there are far too many public servants doing nothing useful. I was in local government and used to see droves of people contributing absolutely zilch to the services the authority provided. And they do all seem to have fat salaries.
A perfect example of shameless waste is the Equality Industry. Every council has a gang of people who dream up inequalities, then bleat on about how to deal with them. My local council has just announced another focus group for their LGBT Employees' Network (I kid you not), as well as a new study by the West Midlands LGBT Consortium into the problems encountered by LGBT carers. These people are a huge drain on resources now, and will remain so until they die.
They are also putting a fortune into a 'Corporate Black Workers Support Group'. This includes worktime meetings for black staff, along with a fully-funded jolly which will include a 'Black Workers Got Talent' competition.
So the answer is not to cut pensions, but to cut the people in non-jobs who will be getting them in a few years time.0 -

No DM readers here. I'm sorry if my views don't agree with the Champagne socialists mindset of the owners of MSE but hey they are my views.
Not everyone is out to get all of "their entitlements" from the state and to take what they can from the hard working taxpayer.
Whether this board ends or not, I think you'll find that this is public opinion and things will change.
What does it say when even the Guardian takes part in this realisation???0 -

How do you know all the taxpayers are hard working? (remember there are a few public sector taxpayers as well). You are sounding a bit like Brownie'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is.
