My DD is 14 months and has red hair. It isn't bright red, more of a browny blondy red, but gorgeous non-the less. I constantly get people asking if I think it will change as she gets older, or where the red comes from, as my DH and I both have brown hair. I also get people asking if 'it was the milkman.' Now I'm probably being over sensitive but I find this really offensive, as effectively they are calling me a 5lag!! I don't understand why it is acceptable to tease people for having red hair but not for any other genetic feature such as race.

I've even heard about people saying ginger people smell weird?? !!!!!!!!! My family are all a bit ginger-ist, and make little comments but would never let her hear them. It does upset me a bit but I try to laugh it off, I'm just planning on teaching her some witty comebacks as she gets older and hoping she doesn't let peoples ignorance effect her.

I'm a redhead and come from a family of redheads and sadly even though I have five children and not one of them has red hair.I hated having red hair as a youngster and the comments I got were horrid so that didnt help. But red hair is something you grow into and now I wouldnt change it for the world.Anyone can be blonde or dark haired but no-one has ever produced a dye that can replicate the colour of true redhair. As for your daughter it will get better but nothing can stop people making horrid comments as they are too stupid to appreciate true beauty.

  • I love all shades of red, copper etc on hair.

My hairdresser uses about six different shades on me - luckily for free as I hair model an people always comment on it.

It makes my blue eyes glow and my peaky white skin look creamy so tell your DD to hold her head up high. I'd kill for natural hair that colour.

Some women will always byatch about things - I'm naturally slim but keep myself toned by exercising loads and eating healthily - there is always one who will reply to any situation with "It's alright for you, you're a size 8" while shoveling down biscuits and saying they can't be bother to go to the gym.

I am sorry but if it would help her feel less obvious and avoid the bully's attention I would let her dye it until she can deal with the attention. It is very important for young people to fit in and they often only appreciate attributes once they are slightly older. Her hair colour will still be there for a few years. I know many red heads get blonde highlights to tone it down.

    Noooooo

Sorry :o but red hair with blonde highlights looks terrible. I see numerous examples of it and it is atrocious.

I feel very strongly about this issue. I'm a blonde myself (naturally) but my OH has red hair and the abuse he had throughout school and into his adult life is disgusting and leaves me feeling desolate about the state of our country. It is disgraceful that people with red hair can be so openly and acceptably abused. What would happen if a comedian or newspaper made flippant, rude and hurtful comments about a black person? Utter outrage, is what would happen. But somehow it has become perfectly ok to make these comments about people with a certain hair colour? It makes my blood boil!!

Many people think it's 'just harmless teasing' but it goes way, way beyond that. People are beaten for having red hair, I've heard of someone pouring bleach over heads, pulling out hair in clumps, threatening and using disgusting language towards redheads. How is this right?!

Jojo, your daughter sounds absolutely stunning and goodness knows I would love her hair! I think a lot of it is jealousy but it's also because people are afraid to stand out. 'Ginger-bashing' has become so acceptable that people are scared to say 'actually, I really like that hair colour and think he/she is gorgeous'. They follow the crowd like sheep, desperate not to make a wrong move and be 'outed' as an individual.

I bet she finds as she grows older, people flock to her because she's unique. When we leave the terrible teenage years behind, we start realising that being different is good, and people strive to stand out! My OH didn't get any hassle for his hair throughout uni, people loved it and he cultivated a massive afro! He still gets comments from stupid, narrowminded people but he's learn to rise above it and let it wash over him.

I really hope your daughter keeps her hair and realises how special she is to have it. :)

Your post above is so true:mad:

Anyway, my DD has red hair, hers is real red rather than orangy, its quite a deep colour.

She loves it & has massive confidence about it, she wears it long & poker straight.
I think her sheer confidence in it, is what deters bullies, they know their is no chink they can get into & exploit.
But its still wrong that their should be any issue.

Like the OP, I think my DD is stunning & unique, partly because of her beautiful hair;)

Ohh I'd love to see a photo of your hair! I dye my hair red, too, but have fallen into 'the brighter, the better' and now I want to go with something that complements me more, rather than is just a fab colour.
  • And, on the subject of pretty red haired women, I always thought Amy Nuttall was gorgeous!
