sometimes the reason why candidaes won't hear anything back about a position is basically because their is no such position available.

its a ploy u see. agencies put up fake adverts purely to get a fresh intake of CV's. I had to do it countless times!!!!

If the agency you worked for was a member of the REC (Recruitment & Employment Confederation) I hope you reported them. Their Professional Standards Team would have investigated as they would have been in breach of their Conduct Regulations as well as the Advertising Standards Authority’s Code. An REC member may also be found in breach of Principles 2 and 3 of the REC Code of Professional Practice, ‘Respect for Honesty and Transparency’ and ‘Respect for Work Relationships’.

It's worth noting that agencies are allowed to post speculative vacancies to build their client base but they must follow specific guidelines and not mislead anyone.

Will never get stamped out if staff turn a blind eye.

Firstly I'm sorry if I've offended anyone because I don't share the same opinion on agencies with most.

I can honestly say, hand on heart that I haven't encountered a bad one. So how could I possibly come on here and start slating them to?!. However by the look of it I'm definitely one of the lucky ones!

On that note I'll bow out after the lovely charachter assisonation earlier (and by the way I'm not even as well paid as a RC!). Good luck in everyones job search!

How do you know you weren't referenced though? They could have offered you the job immediately knowing they could withdraw it if the references weren't satisfactory before you started.

because I would have had to give them the references for them to be able to contact them?! They never asked for them, that information is not on my CV either. I always put 'references available on request'.

There's no reason that they couldn't have just contacted your last two employers HR department, or GM. "Hello, I am trying to obtain a reference for MrsX who was recently employed as a XYZ, who would i need to speak to please?"

Most application forms, have some sort of clause allowing the company to contact past employers, educational authorities and Immigration departments as deemed fit. Some emplyers will of course write back asking for authority from the candidate, but that is rare.

as I am on close terms with one of those two, I think I would know ;-). She tells me whenever she's been asked / given a reference as she's curious to know what I'm doing!

But you didn't give her name as a reference, you said, so the agency may have spoken to someone else at the company.

What a Gentleman. It really isn't a wonder you find difficulty securing work is it. :rotfl:

She didn't give a referee's name, yet insists the agency didn't reference her because they didn't contact the person she would have given. But naturally the agency are in the wrong...

In the immortal words of someone: Go forth...
