  • Calling all Aga users! The holiday house we're staying in has a lovely aga. I've never used one before, so I'm having a great time cooking on it. It's a 2 oven one. Any tips/hints/invaluable advice for me please?

    xx

Top oven is hot, bottom oven is cooler. Left hand plate is hot, right is cooler. Be careful taking things out as its easy to lean your hand on inside top of ovens, and ouuuccchhh!

You will do it by instinct, thats what most of us do, I've only ever burnt one thing, a baked potato which I left in overnight!!!:rotfl:

You will not smell things burning, so set a pinger if you have one, or watch the clock. I'm veggie, so no advice for cooking meat, but baked potato, one hour top oven, pizza - thin crust about 15 min top oven. Boil potatoes on boiling plate and when they come to the boil, pour out the water and stick them in the oven with the lid on to finish.

Dusty will prob say try to cook as much as poss inside, as using the plates on top too much drops the temp.

Finally check the mercury is about where the black line is on top front right, that tells you its about up to temp. Have fun!

Tuesday done! (Most of it was done yesterday - I always seem to do most of a list and then not get those last little jobs that would get me a star!)

  • gfh - unfortunatly they aren't the type of people you can have a word with, they have only been here for about 2 months and have had their car windows put through 3 times and car tyres slashed twice and play music so loud that we can still hear it with all windows and doors shut and being in the furthest room from them and do this till gone midnight
the HA people and said they would have a word about to them about the music, whether they have or not, i'm not too sure, as that has been pretty quiet this last few days!
  • I guess then, dollydaydream that its a good thing it is HA, as you have someone to keep a lid on them. hugs.

So, today, well I've written myself a huge list on ReminderFox so I may plow through that, got a few phone calls to make and some batch cooking to do.

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE RESTING SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE WEEKEND :D:D:D:D

Calling all Aga users! The holiday house we're staying in has a lovely aga. I've never used one before, so I'm having a great time cooking on it. It's a 2 oven one. Any tips/hints/invaluable advice for me please?

Flying.... I've gently and carefully cleaned the aga, which sadly was pretty grubby, but looks lovely now; we've put the wheely bin out, and DH is cleaning the kitchen. :D

Glad you had a lovely time with Toots.

Re the AGA, Grateful has covered most things... If the temperature isn't quite right on either of the rings, then stick a penny/2p piece under the saucepan so that it breaks the contact with the ring. You may also find some odd looking double hooks around which are used to keep saucepan lids slightly open to prevent things boiling over.

Don't put things with plastic lids/handles in the oven . As grateful says, use a timer, you can leave things in for months and not notice. Keep the lids closed when not in use as this is what sends the temperature down. Try not to adjust the burner too much, as you'll find that you end up with it fluctuating wildly and not necessarily at the right time.

Lots of things can be started off on top and then bunged in either oven (depending on how quickly they need to cook) to finish off. Bacon & eggs can all be done in the top oven. Anything that needs to simmer should be brought up to boiling on the hot plate and then if it's a fast boil bunged in the roasting (top) oven or for a slow cook left in the simmering (bottom) oven.

Don't attempt baking unless you're really feeling confident. Flapjacks, scones and stuff like bunloaf are OK, but anything else requires a cake box and is far too stressful until you have developed a long-term relationship with your Aga!

Clean it with vinegar... or burn the evidence off :p

If it DOES overheat, find the largest pans you can and put water to boil on both rings, and open doors and windows to get a breeze going!

Aha, just remembered (foggy head) THATS what I wanted to do, get some small baskets and sort through my food cupboards as I have various ingredients scattered everywhere. I want to get all sauces in one, all herbs/spices in another, etc.

Right I'll pop out to get some in a mo.;)

Are you SURE you don't have something suitable in the house already? I might have some spares to save you going out!

Jo - parcel is in the post - should be with you on Friday or Saturday (it's going parcel post)

Car phone kit being removed, and then I can head off out. Might make a start on the kitchen floor if he doesn't finish soon.

Need to decide whether to make the middle layer of this cake pink (there's a pig theme) or chocolate...

My HHC turned into a baking session as the kids had made a mess in my nice clean kitchen so I decided I may as well do some baking before I cleaned it. So I've made 2 Blackberry and Apple crumbles - I want to do some Twinks as well but I need sugar and flour as I've just used my last.
