It used to be like that here too.
When I was a council tenant, I paid rent and rates in one payment. Water and sewage were in the "rates". So rent, rates (the then equivalent of council tax), water charges and sewage charges were just one bill. Then came the poll tax and the privatisation of the water companies and it all changed.
Ironically, although I've had a reminder from Thames Water, if I were paying twice a year like many people, I would be regarded as being in front. This is because monthly payers are expected to pay in eight instalments. Technically, I've fallen into arrears with the most recent monthly payment even though I've paid about 55% of the annual bill. They always send a monthly payment book automatically even though the only time I ever asked for one was in the very first year of privatisation. I necver use it. I just pay a chunk by BACS in April. When it runs out they write to ask for more LOL. Same with my water supplier (Southern Water). I imagine they will want some soon too. Think I will tell them that I only drink coke and I bathe in asses milk.

Just seems a bit silly to have to pay through the nose for water when 8million gallons or something are lost everyday through leaking pipes...then the companies post record profits

I'd love to be tapped into your phone when you tell them you bathe in asses milk :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Slightly off topic but if it helps the PAD-ing...
You shouldn't be asked questions at work about doing mystery shopping/registering for self-employed additional earnings. They will calculate your tax as normal and you/IR will work out how much (if any) additional you owe on your separate form. You will of course need to work out if its worth doing for you as it could affect benefits, tax brackets etc but you are probably talking hundreds of pounds rather than thousands unless you are very lucky.

First things first. Check out the mystery shopping thread on Up Your Income there is loads of information at the very start and really helpful posters who have done it all before - I'm fairly sure that one of them has something to do with tax as well or at least is incredibly well informed and useful. Don't let the paperwork put you off.

I live in a very small city and work for about 4 mystery shopping companies and get around £100 per month from various assignments. It does vary - this month it was £130 but I don't have anything scheduled for next month at all and it depends very much on where you live, how far you are willing/able to travel etc. The assignments vary too from telephone calls from home to coffee shops and mobile phone enquiries to even bowling and cinema assignments which don't pay much in fees but certainly make my kids happy. Check it out and give it a try.

    Thanks joeyjimbles!
I'll head on over there and check it out!

    Hi All

Sorry I haven't been very chatty just lately - I have not been feeling very well this week (steroid job into elbow joint on Wednesday, plus lots of headaches) and have been feeling very very tired! I have also been feeling quite down - hoping it's just post-holiday comedown!

Anyway, today's PAD is £1.30 to Abominable Amex

  • Well I,ve only got a silly pad of 23p today as I think I may of slightly overdone it with the PADs this month.

Wasnt going to pad at all but I just couldnt bear it!!!

Im going from weekly to monthly pay next month as well as as having a new baby, we will be getting about £1500 from various health insurance payout, grants and OH private hair, (everyone trying to get there hair done before she gives birth!!), was hoping to pad the lot but will probably have to sit on it for a month to make sure we are not short with my pay change and also the car is due a service!!, (fingers crossed all is well!!), if you know what I mean Macgirl., So hopefully a can chip away at the barclaycard and then in October it wont know whats hit it.

Hope you are all well and enjoying the bank holiday:D.
