We have today received a cheque from Friends Prov. for £1175 without having any previous correspondence regarding this - it is not fair that something you own can be sold without your knowledge or signature. We would not have sold these shares if we were given the choice. Can the FSA help? Does anyone have any suggestions?

I received a cheque and closing statement today from Equiniti for my Friends Provident shares and wondered why as I didn't receive anything in the post giving me the option to keep them or cash them in. I received a form in May giving me the option to retain the extra F&C shares that I had been allocated and returned it early June electing to retain the shares rather than receive cash. I did not want to cash in my Friends Provident shares when the price was so low so I'm not happy about receiving the cash value for them and I'm not happy that I have to ring an 0871 number either to complain about it but I have found this alternative number for Equiniti (0121 415 7109) and will try ringing them tomorrow. Has anyone else tried this phone number?

I too received a cheque today having NOT received any kind of notification in September. Possibly due to postal strikes? The last thing that I received relating to shareholdings was the F&C de-merger in which I opted for F&C shares rather than cash. There must be some kind of ombudsman we can refer this too? I'll see what I can find out but would be grateful for any suggestions.

I've spoken to Customer Services at Equiniti using the 0121 number and choosing option 1. From the man's reaction, this is a widespread issue! He could only give me the Equiniti address to write to:

You need to quote your shareholder reference number, state that you never received info re options/form to complete, and say that you would prefer to have the shares rather than the cash. He couldn't give any info as to how the issue might be resolved and the only other phone number he could give was the 0871 number.

I suggested that an 0800 helpline number should be offered due to a large number of people having been affected. I feel particularly sorry for anyone who may not fully understand what has happened!

Having phoned the financial ombudsman and wasw told it was not under there area so would have to complain to resolution - however have had no luck ingetting anything but answer machines from them and on premium lines. I suppose next step is to try to get an email through , though I am not hopeful about a response to this!
