is this legal? - urgent advice wanted on plumbing when renting, please

Got back from holiday to find had had leak which was dripping down through our kitchen ceiling; nothing showing on the first floor, so it was obviously a pipe under the flooring, presumably leading to the central heating in one of the bedrooms, from the location.
Now, as we rent - phew! - luckily none of the cost of this is to be born by us.
However, the slightly worrying news, and reason I'm posting here, is that when our landlord got back to us today, he said he'd send round a non-Corgi registered plumber - who is retired, but is a friend of the landlord, and according to him, used to live on our street and fitted the central heating system for him originally.
This plumber is here now, messing about, and has said there's a leaking pipe under the carpet, as we thought, but he's going to have to drain the whole central heating system to change it.
Is this legal for a non-Corgi registered plumber to do???
I thought not.
Plus, a separate issue, we've not had a copy of the gas safety cert, although a gas check was done months ago (by a different, Corgi-reg plumber). Again, is that legal? I thought a copy was required?
Plus, the landlord gave us all of 15 minutes notice just now (we phoned yesterday), that the plumber was on his way; apparently the plumber was driving past, and the landlord figured it would be difficult to get hold of anyone at the weekend - but 15 minutes? On a Saturday morning? I wasn't even dressed, nor were the kids; luckily it's all tidy, as I had left the house tidy while we were away, and unpacked everything since we got back...but 15 minutes does seem rather a liberty.
Advice, anyone?

you just cant p lease some tenants can you ?
you have a leak - the LL gets someone round in less than 24 hours - what more do you want ?
do you want a tidy home or a wet home - or maybe a ceiling crashing down on your head ?
a CORGI gas registered plumber (now GASSAFE) is compulsory to check teh gas appliances in a property
anyone, qualified or not, can repair water pipes and drain a system of water.
Ask your landlord for a copy of the LGSC - he has a few weeks legally before he has to give it to you after the Check has been done - maybe he just forgot

I agree. you neede corgi (actually now 'gassafe') for boilers. Someone who knows what their doing is fine for pipes.

Shoud add - the non-Corgi bloke who came round today was sent first to do the gas safety check - only when I complained was the Corgi reg bloke sent round.

It's been more than weeks now with no gas safety cert - months, actually. Am fairly sure that's illegal, but would like confirmation.
Not complaining about someone coming round quick, but considering I phoned yesterday afternoon, surely the landllord could have managed more than 15 minutes notice?

yes i would - especially if i thought the ceiling might fall in on my head - you have been away on holiday and have no idea how much water has accumulated on top of the ceiling ..... how long does it take to put on a dressing gown ?
have you ASKED for your certificate ?

workmen have other jobs to do - they dont just Jump Up when they get a tenant related call .... landlords are not magicians and neither are workmen
a bit of give and take on tenants parts goes a long way towards developing a good tenacy0 -

I would have liked a mobile number to get hold of someone asap, not having to wait till the next day to speak to someone, for an emergency. Then 15 minutes notice would not have been necessary.
I see you're strangely silent on the fact that a non-Corgi reg plumber was sent round to do a gas safety check - presumably you think that's all OK, and as a tenant I should just 'give and take'?
Or maybe, just maybe, I should put my family's safety, not to say the law, before 'give and take'? :rolleyes:
ED: Should add that had the landlord been contactable straight away, it would not have been the weekend, and much easier to find a plumber to come round straight away. What if the ceiling had fallen down last night?
