Ive just checked my account and the energy unit price is exactly the same as my SaveOnline tarrif, although I would recieve an additional 2.8% online discount. Then your energy price will be fixed to 1/12/2010, but.....

'FixOnline is not available for customers with prepayment or restricted hours meters. Contract cancellation fee of £10.00 for single electricity and £30.00 for dual fuel may apply.'

Mmm, may or will apply? Seems like an odd choice of words to use. I think I'll stick with my current tariff for the time being.

Discounts vary by region but can be up to 18.9%

Look on a comparison site (such as energylinx.co.uk) for a breakdown in your region. (Click on underlined annual price in results table.)
  • Just a word to the wise for anyone transferring to an Eon tariff. What the switching sites don't tell you is if you should switch away at any time in the future (this could be in a few months, a few years or many years time) you will receive absolutely NO discount on your final bill. Given that Eon get to near the top of the switching sites based solely on the huge discounts applied to their tariff rates this could be a bit of a shock when you get your final bill. So, you would need to time your move right to minimise this sneaky exit fee that's not called an exit fee so it gets no mention even on MSEs recommended switching site energyhelpline. Time it wrong and you could end up with a whole quarter's bill in Winter and the loss of discount could be a considerable sum indeed. Just a heads up for people switching.

    Hi Carmine,

Do you know how long it will take to cancel my account with EOn when I move out of my place next year? Im pretty sure a friend canceled his BG websaver 3 account in a very precise manner so as to as close as possible to our move out date?

If cancelling the account, with no view to switch, can be done quickly, can you not then time it well to avoid a big loss of discount?

The switching of gas and electric accounts is a very inexact art, though. It can take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks! When you observe that spread, you probably realise that it's almost impossible to avoid some sort of 'penalty' when leaving Eon, no matter how long you have been with them. And that's the bit that really annoys me, even if you'd been with them for many many years you still get 'done' by Eon. Contrast this with the exit fees (which I still don't agree with, btw) which have an end date after which there is no financial penalty to switch away and I think you will realise this is a scandalous T&C by Eon, and certainly one which really should be mentioned by the switching sites (I'm currently taking steps to get them to include this T&C in their data boxes).

Would this be IN ADDITION to the loss of discount on the final bill?

    edit:
    seems so.
    4 Ending this contract

If you have recently asked to switch your energy supply to us, you have 14 days from the date you entered into this contract to stop the switch.

If you wish to cancel the contract after this date, the contract will end when your transfer to another energy supplier is complete. We will close your account to the final meter reading. No discounts will be applied to the final bill and you must pay the balance in full. If you have not paid an outstanding energy balance, we may stop you switching that energy supply to another supplier. This contract will end if Ofgem nominates another supplier to provide energy to the premises.

  • Thanks for the heads up regarding switching from Eon. I've just received notification that as my EnergySaver capped deal ends on 1 October they're going to transfer me to their EnergySaver R1 deal. I can't find out on comparison sites if that is a good idea or not, and there are so many flipping different permutations with Eon that my brain is getting fried!
I've got a dual fuel, fixed monthly direct debit and get a discount for online billing.
    Can anyone help please?

Deniseduck, I suggest you give Eon a call (I used a freephone number) so they can base it on your actual account.

I rang Eon this afternoon and spoke to a very helpful lady. I can not fault their customer service to be honest.

Our fixed price (price protection 13 I think it is) ends Oct 1st as well and based on the last 12 months consumption, the FixOnline 3 will be cheapest for us....about a £4 a month increase.

I know the price is fixed but that is something I am willing to live with that.

I am not worried about the penalty as I am happy to stay with Eon due to their good customer service.

We're in the same position- had our letter today saying they were switching us to PP R3- capped til May 2011. Rates are 25.373 Primary, 9.676 secondary.

Off to some price comparison sites now...
