Where to get vegetarian parmesan-style cheese?

Bookhams got back to me and said yes they are doing the Farnham and Winchester markets so I guess it's just a lack of online updates rather than there being a problem with them actually supplying stuff. Not as ideal as being able to by it as and when I need it in my home town but sounds like it's doable until Sainsburys get back to their veggie version of the parmesan next year.

I had a reply too but they've stopped attending my local market
Plus no idea about the supermarket situation but presume just not available.

I'll post if I see the other alternative.

I'm a bit miffed about the Sainsbury's basics one too. However, I have just found some Bookham's in Manchester's Eighth Day Co-Op on Oxford Road / MMU campus. They also stock various other cheese substitutes, but the Bookham's cheese cost me £4-odd

As a vegetarian for some years I was very disappointed to learn a few years ago that Parmesan was not vegetarian. Over time I've tasted many veggie alternatives and substitutes but none made the grade. Most of them either tasted differently or didn't cook the same. However, things have changed recently with Tesco's Everyday Value Italian Style Hard Cheese. Made in Hungary and (bizarrely) packed in Italy this is IMHO the closest yet. The "suitable for vegetarians" appellation is in tiny writing on the back. I'm not a big fan of Tesco especially since their stance on milk from the badger cull areas but I can thoroughly recommend this product.
If I was Tesco I'd be taking out big adverts in the veggie press!:)

I noticed in Morrisons today their basic/saver 'hard grating cheese' (same shape/size as a parmesan wedge) is labelled as vegetarian on the shelf ticket. Couldn't see the vegetarian symbol on the pack though, and didn't have time to read all the small print on the back, will look again next time I'm in there.

They have known its not veggie for many years.

However I see quite a few restaurant menu with a "V" next to the parmesan salad.
They are either not using parmesan or veggies are leaving the restaurant after eating animal rennet.

Have you tried making a dairy-free risotto? I'm lactose intolerant, so experiment quite a bit with recipes. A favourite is red wine and chestnut.

I was saying I hope Italian hard cheese that has a v sign ( imitation parmesan) from Sainsburys really WAS veggie.
We know Parmesan is not. ( though many chefs don't)
