I was just googling around for vegetarian parmesan-style cheese due to noticing this week that the sainsbury's version is no longer vegetarian and thought people here might appreciate that information :) I have also checked out the Waitrose website and theirs doesn't seem to be vege-friendly anymore, either :(

Gutted. Having seen your post I went to Sainsburys to see if they had any old batches, but was greeted by a sign on the shelf :( To be fair, it was quite a big sign and they have not just sneakily changed the recipe.

The sign gave hope that they may have a new supplier by Summer 2014. Ho-hum.
  • Gutted that Sainsbury's basics 'parmesan' is no longer veggie. And my local Waitrose has stopped selling the Bookhams one. Anyone know if there are any other options? Or is it a case of order online and probably pay a fortune for postage?

I use parmesan type cheese in nearly half of the meals I cook. Going to be one sad bunny if I can't get any :-(

Oh no, didn't know Waitrose had stopped stocking Bookhams

Bookhams do sell at farmer's markets though if you're near one and they have offers usually on it.

Yes, it's the block one. The powdered one seems to be veggie still but that's not what I'm after as I like nice big chunks/shavings.

Not sure if it's all Waitrose or just my local one. Waitrose online doesn't seem to have it either though so it's not promising.

Will bear in mind Farmer's markets if I'm ever passing one. We do have one in my home town but Bookhams don't sell there (there is a cheese seller that does some pretty yummy cheeses with vegetarian rennet but not parmesan type).

I wonder if something is up - just checked their fb/twitter and both accounts have had no updates in a month or so plus there was spam posted on Twitter that hadn't been removed. I've sent them a message.

This is the main parmesan style cheese I've had for years so hope they haven't stopped selling it! When it wasn't available before I had Sainsbury's basics once and there was another available in the past year called something vaguely like parmesan cheezly or something in a small squarish long block - think that might have been from Waitrose.
  • I noticed that re their Facebook and Twitter too and have sent them a message via email to ask whether they appear at Farnham or Winchester markets each month (as either would be accessible to me if I could combine it with doing other stuff in the town and buy a good few packs). Their events diary on their website only has the June events so again not sure if there is a problem with them still actually selling stuff or whether they are just a bit rubbish at updating their online information.

Don't have anywhere selling Cheezly locally either but might give it a whirl next time I'm in a H&B with a chiller cabinet if no luck with the Bookhams. Cheezly is a vegan cheese (not tried it before as I eat dairy, although I do sometimes buy the 'bacon' and 'fish fingers' from the same brand) so not sure how it would compare in terms of melting etc.

At least you got a sign - our sainsburys didn't have one. I just noticed they had changed the packaging and decided to check whether it still had the 'v' symbol on it (although I intitally just assumed it was a change of packaging rather than a different cheese altogether so was surprised and disappointed to not see the 'v').

It wasn't the vegan cheezly cheese (I have had that in other cheese types), but was similarly named, I just can't remember it! - I'll try and find it in store again/get a pic. It acted just the same as a parmesan style cheese though.
  • Ah ok - great. I f you can let me know when you see it again what the name is and/or where you got it, that would be fab! :-)
