Fab news! I've just rung Sky - was told as an existing customer I would have to pay £49 for HD box, £9.75 per month for HD channels and the £30 installation fee would be waived as I'm a loyal customer.

Fair enough to pay for the box, but £9.75 per month to get the channels:eek:
    I'll wait until Xmas

There is unlikely to be a fullscale removal of the charge anytime soon, in my view.

The current approach to attract new HD customers, is to subsidise the cost of the first HD box, and is generating record growth.

Sky recently said that it takes an average of 18 months (with the £10 monthly charge) to recover the initial costs. The charge is therefore essential to the current business model, for Sky to recover the initial costs of marketing, supplying, installing the equipment.

Why would they change an approach that is delivering large growth in subscribers and revenue?

I'm afraid its just not going to happen anytime soon whatever the engineer said. Think I heard the same rumour this time last year.

Sky is a public company and such announcements that will have such an impact on revenues needs to be made to the stock exchange first not engineers!

I hope they are planning to scrap the charge.
Pr at least the extra charge for HD multi room box. I pay 2 x HD charge for the 2 HD boxes so would be nice to pay just once for both boxes even better to pay nothing at all

Not his fault if the engineer feeds him bull.
This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.
  • To be fair this may well be the truth. when sky + came out my understanding is that customers was initially charged for that privilege. Now you don't. My friend is a sky engineer and he told me don't be surprised if they scrap the hd charge anytime soon.

Watch this space i suppose all be it with great amount of anticipation!! haha

Sorry although at some point in the distant future it may well happen, to say Sky engineers have been given a date is totally incorrect. Like I said the first people to know will be the shareholders via the stock exchange. Engineers are usually the last to know anything as much as they like to pretend.

HD is still a growth area and the fee is needed to launch new channels as well as substidise the box. It is simple to much of a revenue stream to drop at the moment and I cant see it happening in the medium term until HD is standard. At the moment this is still a premium product in it's infancy.
