Personally I think it's rubbish. Most of the companies could not provide a quote for the USA
Also it does not quote for an 8 seat Astrovan which I always use.
The prices I did get were over £200 more than I paid last November
I would suggest using https://www.airlinenetwork or holidayautos everytime. Then playing one off against the other for reduced prices.
NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!
  • ???i wish i knew how to beet the various charges made when hiring a car in usa (cdw etc)

Looks quite useful but like so many of the internet car hire sites it does not give you all the important information (IMO)

Take, South Africa - you never see the Compulsory Excess for Accident/Theft - this may be so high eg R9,000 (roughly £900) that the risk is too great.

It would be nice to see all extra or compulsory costs on a quote site like this but otherwise for the mainstream countries looks very useful.

  • Seems to be working fine for the UK car hire.

Found a very good deal to hire a car for a week.
For example unlimited mileage for a week at £119,-
Pickup and drop off point Manchester Airport.
  • Hi Marti

Recommended site at end of article.

In this section on the 19th December I updated a enquiry about car hire search engines.

I am a private AVIS Preferred customer and the MSE article made me look at car hire search engines to cut my costs. I am still an AVIS preferred customer as their online booking prices to gether with 10 air miles per hire day I could not beat, plus I get priority service and I am averaging 1 in 2 free upgrades, and not only by just one car group.

The Travelsupermarket site I looked at and noticed it only covered airport pickups and drop offs. I emailed Travelsupermarket to see if they had plans to expand to include all dropoff and pickup points. I got a very speedy reply (less than 2 hours) and was informed they had no plans to expand away from airport pickup and drop off points. This to me makes the site not suitable for full recognition.

I found a site I recommend MSE does consider and the only fault I can find is it does not include AVIS (link at bottom of article).

I visited Atlanta USA in the summer and read the Frommers guide to Atlanta which included details for car hire. It notifies if you collect your hire car from the airport you pay a 20% surcharge (local taxes) over hiring from a city centre location. This is huge!!!!! Atlanta has a transport network with trains from the airport to downtown every 5 minutes. So I will never pay the 20% airport surcharge.

Check if your car hire includes an airport location surcharge!

I recommend the following site as it covers all rental locations not just airport locations. But remember to check seperately AVIS.

  • Hi Martin

Forgot in my earlier recommendation to include this link.

Will save MSE's money on the extra insurance hire companies try to sell hirers.

**URL Removed by MSE Controller 2 - sorry no referrals on this board**

Suggets the two sites are recommended to be used in parrallel.

10 days in Greece - was pleasantly suprised at the prices that came back, was cheaper than HolidayAutos.co.uk who I normally use, and Sky Cars.

Information is well laid out and comprehensive.

    Looks like a good site.

I always use Malaga Car Hire. They are consistently cheap and I have always been upgraded. Also you don't pay a penny until you get there. Their site is a 100 metres from the terminal with a minibus every few minutes. A very efficient organistation

I used eurodrive.com. They are a BROKER, who appoint EuropCar (well known outlet). 5 days medium sized car, Northern Spain, £106.

What I liked about their site is that it gives accurate feedback - if the return time was after 10am on a local bank holiday, it indicated there would be a local surcharge for "out of hours". Hence I just moved the time forward and no surcharge.

It seems that websites like Eurodrive increase customer traffic to well known Car Rental oulets, which allows that outlet to use its fleet of cars more productively. In this instance, EuropCar doesn't make as much as a direct booking, but is happy that their cars are "working" I guess.

The provision and support for my car was entirely handled by EuropCar, so I would never have a need to phone EuroDrive in northern England while broken down on an Austrian mountainside, in theory...
