in Techie Stuff
I have looked at the Wireless thread but can't seem to find anything specfic to answer my question.
I have Netgear Wireless WGR614 which I have hard wired to my PC. The PC is all working fine. However when I start up my Laptop and I click on my network to connect, enter my password, it will briefly connect, and then say configuring address then say could not connect and stop.
Very frustrating. My signal is strong, what am I missing? I'm NOT very techie, and can be a bit of a Muppet!
Can anyone help me please? Thanks

Not sure, but as no-one else has answered - are you saying that the desktop PC is hardwired in, but you are using your laptop in wireless mode? If so, have you checked that the wireless security password is a) set on the router and if so b) entered in the security settings on your laptop?
Sorry if these are dumb questions...0 -
Also check to ensure that you have added your laptop (via its MAC address) to the list of trusted devices.
I think, on Netgear router/modems you go to "connected devices" then select to add the new device.
Otherwise, you will either:
Be able to see the network, attempt to connect or not connection.
Be able to connect to the network but get cut off every few minutes.

... but only if you have enabled MAC address security on the router, I think, (thru "Wireless Station Access List") otherwise you don't need this (though you 'should' really use it for extra security).0

Try and get it working without any security first:
Wireless security (WEP/WPA-PSK) - disabled
Wireless Access List (MAC filtering) - disabled, all wireless stations allowed
SSID broadcast - enabled
The above are the default factory settings. In addition, Wireless Access Point is enabled by default so you should be able to connect wirelessly without any problem.
Check the above wireless settings using your wired connection by clicking http://www.routerlogin.net and logging in to the router. The Username is admin and the password is password.
Next, from your laptop, run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel. See how you go from there and report back if it isn't working.
Does your laptop have wireless built in (WiFi) or have you added a separate wireless card?0 -
i'm not techie, i spent all day yesterday setting my router up
to get the mac address do this it worked for me
* Click on START, and then click on RUN.
* The RUN dialogue box will appear. Type CMD and press ENTER.
* A DOS window will appear. This is also commonly called a Command Prompt.
* Now type IPCONFIG /ALL at the command prompt and hit ENTER. This window will now display the configuration of all of your network adapters. If you have multiple network adapters in your PC you'll see multiple addresses. The MAC Address you're looking for will be listed under the heading Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection.
* Now look for the Physical Address. It should look something like 00-50-BA-D1-BA-71.
* To close the window when you are finished, type exit at the command prompt and hit the Enter key.0 -

I don't have a USB flash drive and would have to enter them in Manually, but where do I do that? I've tried everything and I can't find where I enter the data.
It's built in wifi. Dell Inspiron 1300
I'm sorry!0 -
You don't need a USB drive to transfer the passkey between computers. The idea of turning off all security on the router is so that you _can_ connect wirelessly, copy the passkey over the network and then enable wireless security. If you can't do that, just use a temporary passkey that's easy to remember and type in - you can change it to a more secure key later.
Having said that, initially you don't need to worry about passkeys because it's easier to connect with all wireless security on the router disabled - read my first post again for how to check that.
Then, on the wireless laptop, click Start - Control Panel - Network Connections. Click Wireless Network Connection and then under Network Tasks (on LHS) click 'View available wireless networks'. It should find your wireless network (which should say 'Open' or something, not 'Security-enabled'); click Connect and test your internet connection.0
