One day I will start a proper economic thread, which is just serious discussion.

Please don't. Please start more like this. Preferably when I'm around though, I'm cross with myself that I missed jumping on the in-crowd bandwagon of this one when it was in full swing....

    Anybody watching tonight's?

Young couple, in Scotland, got a kid ... and STILL they can afford to spend nearly £600k on a flat.

    *rolls eyes*

I wish I knew where they get the money from. At their age I still hadn't moved into my first caravan.

I don't understand... Why are they offering so far above the asking price? Did I miss something about property prices *dropping* over the past year?

Because, to some, buying a house is a very emotional thing where the thought of aquiring the house becomes more important than anything else and people are willing to spend 'more than it's worth'. Although the term 'worth' is a purely subjective concept. I guess they are the emotional polar opposite to the spreadsheet type who work out percentage drops on property bee and looks for a cold, rational, financial purchase. There's a happy medium in all of this of course and I'm not saying either method is the right one.

Basic human psychology I guess. Why do people buy Ferraris when a BMW at a tenth of the cost would do? Because, for some reason, they want to.

Edit: I should point out that I'm not watching it because there is football on. They could simply be offering above asking price because they are dumb.

It's like an auction here except you don't know what the other party has bid...Some places here in Aberdeen go for 30% over the asking price....

It's not dumb, it's a different system in Scotland to how the English system is run...

Presumably, in asking for offers over XX, the XX has dropped from the highs of 2007. At least it would be nice to think they had.
