  • 54druids: I am not totally sure of the catchment area for Gryfee apart from the obvious Houston, Bridge of Weir (although, I was sure the whole of Bridge of Weir counted) some of my friends from Kilmacolm did attend Gryffe High, if they didnt attend there, then it was Port Glasgow High (stay well clear of) or Greenock Academy which as far as I am aware, is a pretty good school, certainly was when i was young.

I would say that you will pay top dollar to get into Kilmacolm followed closely by Brudge of Weir and Houston as usually these houses are pretty big and full of millionaires...but aren't houses in Perth expensive also, so might not create a problem.

Another option would be Langbank or Bishopton, but don't go any further down the edge of the clyde than Langbank...trust me :)

I personally like the general area we have been talking about...obviously everywhere has its bad streets/estates/etc, but generally speaking, I am sure you'd be happy in this part of Renfrewshire as it has loads of shops, entertainment, transport are acceptable and the towns of Paisley, Greenock and city of Glasgow is honestly very handy...but also have the quiet countryside where you can go cycling, walks, fishing (with permit), generally a good family life.

With regards Stewarton, as I said, as far as I am aware its ok (a few fellow ex-employees lived there) and I do work in Ayrshire...I would find it a bit of a wrench for shopping as Kilmarnock town centre is poor and the nearest place for shopping would be around 15miles (Silverburn) and for entertainment like theatre, secc, decent clubs/bars/restaurants would be Glasgow. They do have a shuttle bus quite frequent, but in general terms...I would prefer to live in Renfrewshire than Ayrshire.

Thanks for all your responses, its so nice to hear from people who know Glasgow so well. We've another viewing to rent in Stewarton tonight and several in Ayr at the weekend...

If your husband works in Glasgow, then I would seriously re-consider Ayr. It's a bit of a treck, probs bout 1hr (each way) depending on traffic and what part of Ayr you live!! Ayr generally has better weather and obviously a very good beach area where everyone flocks to on a sunny day (all 3 of them per year). But from my point of view, I don't like travelling for so long 10times a week just for work...does my preverbial in:rotfl:

feel free to ask me anything about these areas and I can either answer them myself or ask a work colleague as they are all from Ayrshire :)

well wish I was one of them and then I wouldn't be so bothered about selling my house! I live just outside Perth and love the area and the house but we have to move for work. I think the area you are talking about gives us the closest to what we currently have in terms of type of location within commuting distance to Glasgow. However have not yet seen a 5 bed new build house with almost half an acre of land and not overlooked near glasgow, in the catchment area of a good school for £365k, so therefore don't think Perth is expensive and I think I am going to have to downsize. God help me when the house does eventually sell. I will probably be sending you a pm everyday asking about the area (only joking)

Hi there I live in Kilmarnock but my girlfriend lives in Stewarton so I know the places very well

For starters Stewarton is a nice place to live if your up near the top end (i.e. nearer the motorway and the academy). Down the bottom end is pretty rough, some of the council flats are notoriously dodgy and they have built a lot of brand new fancy homes down near Lainshaw woods that are being snapped up by commuters but beware the houses are nice but you'd be living next to the roughest street in the town (they tried to get approval for another road that would allow you to cut out the dodgy street but planning permission for it was refused)). It's about a 30-40 min drive to Glasgow, although in mornings it's more like an hour. The plus side is the train is only 30 mins to glasgow and they're bringing in a half-hourly service to make it ideal for commuters.

One of the snags aobut Stewarton is that if your driving and you go via Johnstone/Bridge of Weir your looking at a 30-40 min drive but even longer when it's busy. Also to hit the Motorway your talking about 5-10 mins to even reach the motorway via the country back road, so the journey times in car are deceptively the same as travelling from Kilmarnock.
Kilmarnock is quite nice if you get a nice area, Gargieston's the upper end of the price market partly because of the schools but it has a bypass that takes you within minutes of the M77. If your commuting then Southcraigs (top end of town) is ideal as the motorway's right on your doorstep. In terms of travelling I've got to Glasgow in 20-25 mins when quiet, but have spend upto an hour on bus in morning during rush hour. The trains about a 50 minute journey and they're soon starting to bring in a regular half hourly train instread of the once an hour train at present.

    Hope this helps folks

There is a really nice (new estate) in Elderslie that has houses with 5beds and gardens with views of hills in the distance...it looks really nice and if I am right, prices are probs around the £300k - £450k mark (i think) and certainly a few months ago, loads of them were for rent/sale
  • Hi,

Have you thought about Burnside/Rutherglen? We moved there 4 years ago, as we were priced out of Pollokshields/Drumbreck. We wanted an traditional sandstone property, and there are lots in this area.

Burnside and Calderwood are both good primary schools.

We moved up from Ayrshire as the Motorway to get in to Glasgow in the morning was just a nightmare. For me to drop my little girl at nursery as well - it just became a joke. The silly thing is you can do the same journey on a Sautrday morning and it will take you half the time. Nothing more frustrating than sitting in traffic !!!.

Also I ditched my car after we moved to Burnside as train from Rutherglen was 10 mins to Glasgow Central - Perfect! - saved a fortune!.

  • Thanks everyone, you've all given me great advice. We've ruled out Stewarton now (the houses we saw were next to the rough part). I'm viewing in Uplawmoor, Ayr and Neilston (I believe Neilston is in East Renfrewshire?). Still trying for Newton Mearns too as I know there are good schools there...

i moved to bridge of weir recently and i highly reccomend it.

The area is lovely - my garden looks onto the fields with lots of cows!

The school is fantastic - such a different way of teaching from glasgow schools and from certain areas there is a free bus. ive not heard about the gryfee catchment thing but I live as far from gryffe as you can get whilst still being in Bridge of weir and the gryfee bus collects from the top of my street.

The village is really friendly and has an italian and indian resturant and 3 chinese's and a few indian takeaways. Theres a somerfield , butchers and various other wee shops . The two pubs are the greatest but in houston theres a few really good pubs with good food - that are family friendly.

If you need any more advice just let me know! We definatly made the right decison in moving here

forgot to mention my boyfriend works in the city centre and he gets the X6 bus up and back every day.

Wow I am really pleased I read this thread, it really helped me too lizzie, so thanks for the post. Lizzie I would check out Neilston's catchment area first. Phil, do you know which secondary school serves elderslie? Angelfins, I thought quarriers village was one of the areas outwith the catchment for Gryffe? Are your kids at this school and if so what is it like? My husbands business is in Hillington so this area would probably be the best for us commuting wise. The only property I have seen that i liked so far was in Alloway in Ayrshire but having read this thread, that is going to be too much of a commute. My added worry now is that if we do sell, I won't find a property I like.
