Glasgow move

My family and I are moving to Glasgow. Can anyone tell me anything about Stewarton, Ayrshire. Is it a good area to live?

Hi , I am also moving to Glasgow (well if I ever sell my house in Perth), I personally would not look at Stewarton simply because it is so close to Kilmarnock (yes I am ready for the barage of abuse if anyone who lives there reads this) and my weegie husband tells me he would not live there. We have looked further south at Alloway and Doonfoot which are very pretty areas and are in the catchment for Belmont school and the motorway gives good links to the south and west of Glasgow. Also Alloway primary has a very good name. Hope this helps. If you change your mind and wish to move to Perth instead be sure to let me know (well! you cannot blame a girl for trying) Good luck

  • Hi, thanks for your response. I think we'd like to be slightly closer to Glasgow if we can as my hubbie commutes there for work...

yes us too. What about the west of Glasgow - Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm are very nice, or the South Giffnock, Carmunnock (some parts), Newlands, Newton Mearns or Eaglesham - you don't say wether or not you need to consider schooling. If you do anywhere in East Renfrewshire has excellent schooling but there is also a great school in Houston. My hubbie works in Glasgow and currently commutes from Perth which believe you me is a hike (hence 1 of the reasons for the move). He works in the West but the motorway through to Ayrshire has opened up our options. Hope this helps a bit ( I have been researching the area for a while in preparation for our move) Hope I have been a help

  • Hi there, yes we would need a good Primary school as we have 2 boys...we're looking to rent as we've rented our house in London but we just can't find anywhere in East Renfrewshire...Its so frustrating:o

Stewarton is an ideal area with good shops, great transport (rail, bus & near M77), schools & country living.

  • Well, I live in Paisley, grew up in Erskine and Kilmacolm (29 years in total), so hope to god i Know the area pretty well by now :)

Personally, if your husband is working in Glasgow, then I would go for East Renfrewshire, however, properties are that little bit more expensive as they are close to Glasgow, generally speaking have better schools and have a nice relaxed way of life. I would also say that of Kilmacolm, Bridge of Weir, Brookfield, Houston, Kilbarchan, Howood etc etc. Growing up there was really good, you had the countryside on your doorstep, yet the towns and cities were only 30mins drive. Bear in mind though, these areas don't have the same standard of transport links as say East Renfrwshire, Paisley, Renfrew etc. but if you have a car, then that shouldn't cause a problem.

i wouldnt consider Paisley as it's gone down hill and probably going to get worse before it gets better (I live there, so allowed to speak badly of it), and stay out of Linwood and Ferguslie Park, not the nicest of places.

If I were moving and worked in Glasgow, then it would be Kilmacolm, Bridge of Weir, Houston (although, I am getting the feeling that Houston shall go downhill a bit within the next 10yrs), Kilbarchan, Howood, Brookfield. All very nice places with a more relaxed, friendly way of life...I remember the times I walked down the village of Kilmacolm as a boy on a Saturday morning and everyone was saying good morning and I dint know these guys from Harry. There aint many places like that in Britain nowadays.

Could give you a better idea if you can give us and idea of Budget and requirements for your house.

    Hope this helps
  • Forgot to answer your question...woopsies!! :)

Stewarton I found very cleaky (forgive spelling) as I find most small ayrshire villages. Should it snow in the winter, then on past experience...Stewarton was a nightmare, so bear this in mind.

Bottom line is...it is generally an ok place and definately not the worst...but I wouldnt move there if I had other options.

    Hope this helps

Lizzie: careful with Bridge of Weir though as not all houses are in the catchment for Gryffe High School in Houston (which may be a long way off at the moment but it comes around v. quickly). Kilmacolm is also not in the catchment and I don't know if Phil can comment on this but I think Gryffe is getting quite full (but again this is a long way off). I agree with Phil totally and if you want more out in the country then go for Bridge of Weir. However there are not many houses around but I think I have seen quite a few rental opportunities.
Phil: don't suppose you know which areas are in the catchment for Gryffe apart from parts of BOW or Houston?
You never know Lizzie our kids may end up at the same school as you have exactly the same needs as me only I have a house to sell.
p.s. I am told Netherlee primary is excellent
