Pick up poops and pop in poo tray.. WE got a 10 week old kitten 1 month ago from a local rescue centre, she was litter trained. WE have her litter tray down the side of the settee in a quiet corner and she uses it fine without exception, which is great.:T
However, sometimes she misses the tray, and does her business on the newspaper. Is this just something that will improve with practice? Also , and this maybe connected, she doesn't have the hang of covering up atall. she obviously knows she has to do it as she is scratching around furiously for about 5 minutes, usually scratching the paper and getting nowhere. Again, will this just come with practice or can i change something i am doing?
We have 2 older cats, we haven't had a kitten before so are learning lol. The other 2 go outside which we want to encourage her to do.You're not your * could have not of * Debt not dept *0 -
She sounds perfectly normal to me. I've had loads of kittens over the years (getting my next one in 4-5 weeks:j - already have two cats) and they've all done this.
She's obviously too young to go outside at the moment, but when she is old enough, to encourage her to go to the loo outside, move her litter tray closer to the door and then outside. Once she's got the idea of "going" outside, take the tray away (it sometimes helps to put normal earth in instead of cat litter when the tray is outside).0 -
Do you have the tray standing on newspaper? That's what it sounds like to me.
It could be that she prefers to use newspaper (many rescues will use newspaper to line the litter tray), you could try putting newspaper under a small amount of litter so she has the best of both worlds - and don't put newspaper under the tray.
Or you could try a tray with a hood - that way she has to go inside to use it.
Best of luck xx (and we love pics of kitties *hint* hint*

Our kitten doesn't miss his litter tray, but he does the same thing with scratching on newspaper for ages (we have newspaper under the tray, and under his food bowls). He's always done it, so I think where his Mum lives had newspaper down too.0

She might think the newspaper is part of the tray and/or will cover up her mess! Is the litter tray big enough for her?
Our cats aren't amazing at covering it up, they do try, but try covering it up with the wall or carpet sometimes or getting the litter and totally missing haha.0 -
My 2 cats tray habits was the older lady one scaping a hole, doing it and burying it. The minx sctrathed furiously for a few minutes sending grit everywhere and then having a poo and leaving it on show. They rarely changed so I suppose it's up to the cat.0

I think your wee kitten is perfectly normal !
We had the same problem with one of ours, she kept missing ... and she'd look around the tray trying to find it, all perplexed ! The puzzled look on her face was hilarious. And she'd dig away trying to cover something which wasn't even in the tray in the first place ... if God loves a trier then she was especially blessed !
So. We bought a hooded tray, but took the plastic door off (she was too small to open it). And she managed to master that straight away.
Good luck with kitten !I no longer contribute to the Benefits & Tax Credits forum.0
