I am not ill informed how many children today dont have a mobile or some sort of designer gear or the latest football strip cant be many.

I don't know - but seeing as you are so well informed you tell me. How many children in the UK don't have a mobile or some sort of designer gear or the latest football strip? You must know the answer as you are not ill informed.

Of course, the children in question that do have such luxuries could have had them bought for them as birthday or Christmas presents - or perhaps they work a paper round and save really hard.

Laugh if you want you will still have to accept my opinion. Even if children didnt have a uniform they would still have to wear something.

I will continue to laugh at you, and no I don't have to accept your opinion. I can (and do) reject it.

Children's clothes can be quite cheap - but school blazers, decent school shoes, polo shirts etc with school logo's are expensive.

Can you explain why you can't afford new clothes?

    red devil,

Are you going to bother to follow up on your own thread?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Back to original topic, have you tried your local freecycle? Just a thought as we got a fleece, jumper and t-shirt with logos on from a lovely lady on ours. She saved us probably about £25 with just those. (She also threw in 2 logod fleeces to fit DD when she is 9, so a few years to grow in to them!) I was so greatful, and she knew it!
We bought the rest of what she needed to comply with the uniform (we aren't on any benefits, other than working tax and ordinary CB ), and it wasn't that we couldn't afford to buy anything, but the lady offered them on freecycle and we were the only ones to respond.
We are however lower on money than we would hope to be due to me currently being off sick, which was completely unforseen, so it was a big help.

I'm sure you have known you need clothes longer than a parent has known a child needs a uniform??

A flawed argument if ever I saw one, especially considering where vouchers are provided for the uniform supplier the money would not be easily wasted/used for other things as where cash is provided.

I think school uniform grants are one of the better ideas to help children of low income families. It is completely out of a child's control that their parents may be on a low income/made redundant etc. At least the comparable adult is on the benefit themselves so may or may not be able to alter their future (e.g. if a job becomes available to them, health improves). I do not see why a child should be picked on or segregated because their mum or dad is not around or does not/cannot work.

I was very lucky in school to have parents that were able to afford to pay for my uniforms themselves but if I had not been I would hope I would not have had to go without because somebody older thought it unfair that they could not be clothed for free.

As an alternative I would suggest aproaching the school. I know they usually have tons of unclaimed 'lost property' which is usually in very good condition and I know some schools just bag this up and give it to charity shops.

I'll repeat this again in case it got lost in debate. It might be of some practical use.

Circumstances change. It is impossible to plan for every eventuality. Sometimes people need help - like you asking for a grant to buy clothes. Can you really not see the hypocracy of your posts?

Der? How old are you? Twelve? Perhaps they use the money from their paper round to top up their phones. You are in no position to make such sweeping statements not without some facts and figures to back it up anyway.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I am not arguing, I am debating - and I don't need to have 'the last word' because I am over the age of consent and have therefore risen above such childish nonsense.

If you haven't been able to find out if your area has grants or not, try the school directly. Quite often the PTA will have good used uniform - we do at my son's school, and trousers sell for about 50p, shirts the same, blazers with the badge are £5. There's also rugby kit etc. Anything that did not come in as decent good quality was put to charity, we didn't sell on anything that was not of good quality.
Keep an eye out on freecycle as well - I have just put a load of gray trousers, white shirts from my three on there - the only hard part is trying to be fair in the distribution of them! Maybe put a 'wanted' on - and see what response you get. Good luck :)

Going back to the old days, uniforms were introduced to ensure all children looked the same and did not look different/be bullied if their parents could not afford the latest fashion trends.

The funding has changed too - years ago benefits were paid and a clothing grant for specific shops given, these days tax credits are more generous and are a minimum income for all the childs basic requirements.

In reality some help is available by way of grants to those on benefits depending where you live, whereas the people who really struggle the most are the more recently employed/low earners with mortages - in other words the help that is available is not directed at those who are genuinely in need (as opposed to not managing well) and it is a postcode lottery.

Oh well one good thing I've learned from this thread is to ask the school if they want old uniforms to sell off cheaply (usually go in charity bags).
