school uniform grant????

hi there-years ago they used to do tokens/grant for people on JSA or equivalent for parents to buy the school uniforms-do they still do this and if so where do i go to get information about it? Was it a local council scheme or is it a DWP thing?

doesnt look like my local authority offers this service-maybe worth someone else checking on there thou for there local authority.

Tax credits, child benefit etc available to claimants with children are now so high and generous these grants are no longer necessary for those on benefits. Any remaining private beneficent or charitable funds should be limited to children of working parents.

In my area you apply to the Bursar of the school, they have a set budget which is split between the parents they know are on benefits.

As i have 3 children in high school i am offered £30 each at the one school they attend and £15 per child at the other school.

You have to fill out a form and show proof of eligibilty. The 'award' is then in the form of a voucher which you take to the specified uniform shop so the ensure it goes on what it is intended.

In my area the council do give school uniform grants, however it is only available to certain age of children.

I know I missed out on it last yr as My daughter had started reception yr in primary school. And my son had started yr 7 in secondary school.

However there is no Grant available for this yrs term. I think I have to wait for another yr before its available again.

I dont agree with uniform grants if parents are spending out on the latest mobiles, trainers, footy tops for their kids or smoking.

However some schools have second hand uniform sales which could be looked into as an alternative if a grant isnt available.

It depends on where you are. Im in Edinburgh and just got mine in the form of vouchers. Apply to the local council. Primary school children get £43 high school £50 (I think) You can also pick forms up in schools. The vouchers are only redeemable in a few shops but can also be used in schools to purchase the proper school sweatshirts etc.

Generous?who for?School uniform can be a massive burden for families living on benefits,true they can also be a burden for those working,but definately less so.Imho of course:j
