You're a MFW aren't you? Do you save up a lump sum at a time?

I'm a MFW wannabee if that makes sense. I relocated in middle of property crash so went into rented whilst selling my old house. Currently in rented waiting for dream home to appear on the market.

My current plan is money goes automatically into regular savers each month. I'd look at getting one of these it really focuses the saving plus higher rate than usual savings accounts plus it means you can't spend the money!

Then at the end of a month I move any money left in my account into savings. I have a bit in very easy access so can get that out quickly if big bill or something comes up. I tend to buy as much as possible on my Amex cash back card which means I end up paying for it the month after :D

As for your mortgage best to speak to you provider they all have different ways / rules regarding overpaying. I would like ultimately to get one where you can overpay as you go along rather than a once a year lump sum - I'd be tempted to spend it before then :rotfl:

I'm sure you'll be back on the wagon soon but if not we'll drag you on :p

something for some reason I never did before

The phrase 'in for a penny, in for a pound' springs to mind in relation to this observation. I've noticed quite often that DFWs compensate for the fact that they're paying off £££s from their debts on payday by leading lifestyles that are a bit more wasteful on a day to day basis.

Once debts are paid off I think people appreciate the value of their money a bit more (as opposed to the banks') and a bit more frugality seems fairly understandable...

    Good for you :)
