dounome wrote:There is no problem with keeping your email addy as long as you include it in your microsoft outlook or outlook express settings, alternatively you should still be able to access it from BT homepage.
Sorry to be a bit slow with this sort of thing but would you mind elaborating on this please.
Thanks

You can use outlook express or microsoft outlook to access any email address
very easily. Would have to know if you have used either of them before to open emails before telling you how to access your email through them.0 -
hi there
not sure if you need this but here goes.
Step 1 Open Outlook Express, click [Tools] then select Accounts.
Step 2. Click the [Mail] tab, then click [Add] and select Mail
Step 3. The wizard will start. Type in your name then click [Next]
Step 4. Enter your email address (yourname@btinternet.com) then click [Next
Step 5. Enter the BTopenworld mail server address: mail.btinternet.com
(this goes where it says pop server and smtp server.)
Step 6. Enter your Username and Password then click [Next]
Step 7. Click [Finish].
Step 8. To complete the account creation process click [Tools] then select Accounts
Step 9. highlight your email, then click [Properties]
Step 10.Select the [Servers] tab.
Click the My server requires authentication box to place a tick inside.
Click [OK]
Step 11. select connection tab and then place a tick inside "always connect to this account using" select the drop down arrow and highlight your isp provider.
click apply then ok to come out of setup.
This may seem longwinded but really quite easy once you start.
any probs i'll gladly help.0 -
To keep a BT email address just downgrade your account to dial up and dial in every 90 days to keep the account alive. After 60 days of inactivity they even send you an email to remind you. You cannot send emails using Outlook via BT but you can send them via your new ISP's SMTP server and they have your BT address as the sent addressLearn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. I can still access my mail with BT Yahoo even though my account lapsed at least 2 years ago, most of the stuff is spam anyway.0

My old LineOne (now Tiscali) e-mail account is still in use a good 4 years after I left them, and even gets used when my own domain goes on the blink (make sure the SMTP settings in Outlook are set to your current ISPs). It's also the e-mail address I put in for all my banking, mermbership, subscriptions etc.
Years ago (just after the Tiscali takeover) they sent out an e-mail asking how often I used it as they were looking to cut back. I told them I still needed the address, and to this day they have never cut it off.
So, in theory it shouldn't be a problem at all - may be worth checking the small print as noted above : some ISPs may require you to log in every so often (Line One/Tiscali don't).0
