Will I lose my email address if change ISP ?

Sorry to be so ignorant about these things but with the Talk Talk free broadband offer I am considering leaving btinternet but am not sure how it works as my email address is ******@btinternet.com. and has been for nearly 10 years so I don't want to lose it.

Any simple advice would be much appreciated to clear up the confusion in my mind !

Thanks in advance
RL

I know you want to keep your BT one but the best thing is to use web based ones like hotmail or gmail as it doesnt matter when you change ISP's.

If you want a gmail, PM me for one or do a search on this site

Alternativley you could try having your own domain name

    itonlyme@RL.com for example.

www.freenetname.co.uk would cost 1.66 per month and you can have as many addresses as you like.

I have used this company for 6/7 years now and not had a bit of bother with the domain name. very easy to use...

    just my 2 cents workth!!

Ask them to revert your account to dial-up pay-as-you-go, rather than simply cancel. Some ISPs will expect you to ring up every once in a while eg 120 days, but some don't seem bothered.

BT is one of those companies, but watch out, recently they have started shutting down inactive dailup accounts, also if it is residentual BB you have (ie not business) the tech desk that deals with this is based in India..last time I called for a customer, they did not understand my request

Hi - I cancelled my BT broadband last June and can still send and receive emails using my BT address through the btinternet/yahoo website. I can still receive BT emails through Outlook express, but I cannot send messages.

    Hi
Have you tried changing your SMTP setting in Outlook Express to your new email address from your new isp, this usually works

    Hope this helps

Noone should tie themselves up to an ISP email address just in case you switch and then they do turn it off. Bag a £1.99 a year domain eg https://www.petethepet.com, which will give you the ability to do pete@petethepet.com, petesmissus@petethepet.com etc, and then forward mail to your current ISP whichever that is. Remember to spoof your outgoing email addy in Outlook. Do this before you switch ISPs so you get a while of parallel running.

There is no problem with keeping your email addy as long as you include it in your microsoft outlook or outlook express settings, alternatively you should still be able to access it from BT homepage.
