"Anyone else find it scary that people like Spangles are on the road?"

I am sorry you feel that way! I have already said that no renewing my MOT was a genuine oversight. I have no need to lie on a website! Believe me, in many years of driving I feel awful that for the first time I have done something illegal and obviously I am paying the price now. Big time.

My excess on my insurance is massive, and I am likely to get a low return price - if at all - on the cost of now having a write off after my car was smashed in to.

I have been to the police station and held my hands up to my lack of MOT. In transpires it did expire in May 09 (I still haven't had the wretched logbook from DVLA). I was told by the police not to worry too much and that it 'wasn't the end of the world'.

Thank you Liam. I agree that it is much worse when people drive without insurance as that is a deliberate ploy.

Is that down to your "voluntary" excess being high? (If so, you chose it!!!)

On a brighter note, you should get this back (together with all your other uninsured losses) from the third party - assuming as you were stationary when hit that liability rests 100% with the third party. You need to claim it from them directly.

Regarding your low return price on your policy, you could have avoided this problem by not using your own insurance to make the claim in the first place, but going straight to the third party for the claim.

But check your policy, (as they probably will not pay you anything back following the claim), and see if it will let you continue with it with your replacement car - some policys end when a write off is involved.

    Bad advice.

It is just not true to say having no insurance invalidates your tax.

And you are not committing "fraud" by using an uninsured vehicle (whether or not it is taxed!).

Will their next post be the old classic that your Insurance is invalid if you do not have a Tax Disc or that not having Insurance invalidates your MOT

No no - it's the other way round - not having an MOT invalidates your insurance!

    :rotfl:
  • Quentin, of course you're right that I opted for the high excess on my premium. I am just bemoaningthe fact that this incident is going to cost me dear.
Incidentally, my insurance company tells me that forgetting the MOT does NOT invalidate my insurance at all. We will see, as they are still working on the claim.
    I will report back.
One of the things I feared most after doing internet 'research' is that many people claimed that not having an MOT invalidated the insurance.
