    How many previous owners?

Oh, a few. I've lost the paperwork though, so can't really verify the actual number.

(I should have probably given the stock answer of "just one other careful, lady owner who just took her for a ride once a week", but that doesn't seem right somehow).

I'm sure I remember from Business STudies classes aeons ago that white goods are no longer designed to last as they were in the old days. I'm sure he was saying that they have a determinable life-span in order to ensure that there was a constant market for them. This makes sense, if fridges still lasted forty years, we wouldn't need 30 different chain stores to sell them new, one would suffice.

On the one hand, I disagree with this idea, on a more selfish note, I think that the !!! production of white goods kees the prices down - not that that's any excuse for them having a three year life span mind you.

unlike with cars, there isn't a national register showing who has owned the washing machine for the last 10 years, or even any reliable way of telling how old it is, which is the first problem.

plus it's a stupid idea - what next? food out of date? take it back to asda and get a scrappage allowance on a replacement battery chicken.

how about buy what you can afford, when you need to.

Its because retail groups, mainly DSG, have lost something like £460m in the recession on selling white goods. So they seem to be jumping on the jobs bandwagon, saying this will save jobs, give us some money.

The playing god has to come to an end though. We should face up to why this recession has happened and address the issues.

It's not possible to bail anyone and everyone out. Too many of us led a lifestyle we couldn't afford and we need to adjust to living more realistically and within our means.

It's not possible to rescue everyone and as long as we keep trying to we will avoid dealing with our problems, hence prolonging them.

Govt doesn't want to take the necessary action as there's an election due. I didn't initially agree with the 'w' shaped recession model, but I'm changing my mind now.

Sometimes I get drunk, come up with an idea, write it down, and go to bed. The next morning I read it, and usually think it's nonsense. Labour need to stop binge drinking.

I know facts don't play much of a part in debate here, but it's nothing to do with the government. It's a bunch of retailers asking for government intervention in the market.

Funny how that only seems to be acceptable in bad times.
